i got two snails from a LFS a few weeks ago now, and their shells have looked like this even before i brought them home. this wasn’t my doing, this is how they looked at the pet store. why are their shells layered looking? i can’t explain it, it almost looks like they have stairs on their shells. is this shell erosion? the employee did say they have low PH water so if this is some sort of erosion i wouldn’t be surprised. i just want to know if there’s anything i can do to help them! thanks!

I agree with what kallililly1973 said, this is severe Calcium Deficiency. Their shells erode in acidic water, so make sure your water is on the hard side and add something to add calcium like cuttlebone.

okay thank you so much. they are in a tank with african dwarf frogs and with my past experience, i know african dwarf frogs are really sensitive. will putting cuttlebone in the tank effect the frogs at all? i also am actively raising my PH with crushed coral so hopefully they recover from their neglect soon

Could try to add a piece of cuttlebone if its a calcium deficiency on their shell. Here is some info to see if it compares to whats goin on wit your snails. Good luck!

Yes, I have the type for birds. Unfortunately, I can't help you with the ADFs.

no worries, thanks for your help. from what i read it’s okay for other fish, and, after doing more research, calcium is a part of KH (i think?) which ADFs like / high KH anyways, so this shouldn’t harm them. hopefully i’m getting this stuff right. thanks again!!
