Crabs And Fish

TheCrabMan

Hello everyone, very new to fishlore.com

Background information:
>5 gallon tank 3 guppies
>5 gallon tank 3 guppies and 15 fry
>5 gallon tank 11 grown guppies
**Tank stays like this for a few months**
> goes to local pet store
> spontaneously buys 2 red claw crabs
> arranges tank to have land and water for fish and RCC’s (Red Claw Crab)
**stays like that for a week**
>crabs work together and eat my favorite (and biggest) guppie
>decide they are living to close together
>Buys 10 gallon tank and filter etc.
>arrange tank to be 1/3 land and rock and heavily planted for crabs 2/3 open water less planted with a single hollow log in middle of open water
>love the fish and crabs living together in harmony
**wants more diversity**
>purchases fiddler crab
>RCC’s fight him and grab him by the big glaw and banish him to the hollow log
>he looks lonely
>purchase another fiddler crab because “everyone needs a friend” ~Bob Ross
>check on everything an hour later
>RCC’s have both been banished to the hollow log and the fiddler crabs control the rocks and dry land...

In my 10 gallon tank I currently have:

>11 grown guppies
>3 guppie fry
>8 ghost shrimp
>2 red claw crabs
>2 fiddler crabs
2 skirted tetras

Tank is setup for 1/3 dry land heavily planted with rocks and caves bellow, 2/3 open water lightly planted

I have $6 and a handful of quarters to invest

The questions I came here to ask:

> is this a healthy aquarium/habitat setup?
>can I make the tank better? How?
> should I introduce more species of crab or fish?
>everyone’s overall thoughts? Any advice?

Cheers, TheCrabMan

Not really a crab expert, so I’ll answer the problems I see, those are allot of guppies in a 5g(I would say two males)!!! I don’t think it is safe to keep crabs with fish

TheCrabMan

I did not know guppies bred so easily and made so many babies (very new to aquariums aswell) and only originally intended to keep 3 guppies in the 5 gallon - 5 gallon is currently empty, open to suggestions as to what to do with it

AJE

Yes, they do breed like there is no tomorrow, you need to either feed guppies to the crabs, get rid of all females or get a bigger tank

TheCrabMan

Update: it’s now been just under 24 hours and all crabs and fish have settled in and now live in harmony in the 10 gallon tank

I thought fiddler crabs need brackish water!?

AJE

So did I, I didn’t ask because other than a few threads I have seen I know nothing about crabs so I didn’t mention it
I thought fiddler crabs need brackish water!?

As far as my understanding goes both red claw crabs and fiddler crabs can live in freshwater or saltwater however they thrive in brackish water
