I'm going to get my API freshwater test kit today and my 8 ounce bottle of safestart plus is coming in tomorrow. Ill be heading to pick up a rock/cave decoration for when I get my ghost shrimps. My tank is uncycled. Its just been running with filters and prime since yesterday. The guy at petsmart said he doesn't recommend adding in ammonia to the tank. So I asked him what he thinks I should do and he said to get some feeder fish to cycle the tank and once its cycled to bring them back and add my fancy goldfish that I want to get for my 40 gallon breeder with some ghost shrimps. What should I do??

Please do a fishless cycle. If you don't care about whether the feeder fish deserve to go through the stress of a cycle, only to be sent right back to the horrible conditions in the feeder fish tank when you're through--then please consider the possibility that they can carry disease and parasites.

Ammonia, on the other hand, doesn't carry disease or parasites, doesn't need to be fed, won't die, and can be carefully applied in the exact amount that you require.

I bought an ammonia bottle a few days ago hoping to start my cycle with it but some people said not to use it and to get another brand. I bought this one from my local grocery store and its Domestix brand non-streaking all-purpose household cleaner. It doesn't have an ingredients label but ive heard you can tell if its safe to use if it doest foam up like soap when you shake it. This bottle just makes some bubbles and pop instantly like when you would shake a sprite bottle. Its a clear liquid not the kind with lemon scent or anything so would I be able to use this? And If I do, how much would I add? Do I just add and test every time until 4ppm is reached on the apI test kit? As stated before my tetra safestart+ arrives in the mail tomorrow so could I add ammonia now so it will have something for the bacteria to feed on? or would I have to wait for safe start+ to arrive and put that in first before the ammonia? I'm lost sorry

Are you planning on adding any fish to your tank?

I'm so sorry, I'm running out the door right this second (or I **should** be) but this link will take you to a Q&A about Tetra Safestart Plus with some good information:

YES, that's the exact bottle. I was planning on once my tank was cycled on adding 2-3 orandas (2-4 inches in size) and about 5-10 ghost shrimps. So if the ammonia bottle is safe then I won't be needing to add fish and risk any deaths.
