Cory's dying

Hi there,

I have an issue with my corys which has started recently. First noticed it last week when one of the Cory's was acting strange - lethargic at first and resting in odd places, then rapid breathing and laying at strange angles/ on its side. After a few days this Cory died. There were no physical signs of illness at all. A few days later another Cory started acting the same way and died the next day. Now another Cory seems to be breathing rapidly and acting lethargic. All other fish in the tank seem completely fine, and the other Cory's at the moment seem completely fine.

Tank is 50 gallons and contains 8 cardinal tetras, 7 ember tetras, 1 BN pleco and 3 amano shrimp. There were 7 delphax corys, now 5.

Water seems fine, 0 ammonia and 0 nitrite and 15 Nitrate. 24-25 degrees Celsius.

Any idea what might be causing this and what I can do?

I lost all of my eight Panda Cories with similar symptoms. I was not able to determine a cause. My current theory is that food might have been a contributing factor. Maybe they starved to death. They were on a gravel substrate and some have said it is difficult to get small food that falls deep in the gravel. In my case, the guppies pick food off the bottom. Maybe my Cories were not getting enough food. Could try food that sits up a bit.

Other contributing factors may have been weak fish to begin with. Possible bacterial infection. Maybe my acclimation process was not gentle enough. I was keeping tank at 78 degrees which is a little warmer than Panda Cories prefer.

I would like to get Cories again. But if I do, it will be on a sand substrate. I will acclimate very gently. I will make sure they get food. I will do what I can to make sure I get strong fish to begin with.

I also worry about my 9 corys getting enough food. I had a huge problem in my tank last week caused by overfeeding because of my fear of that. I have 12 to 15 shrimp that also scavage. I was giving too many algae wafers. At night, just take one wafer and break or crush it into pieces, and sprinkle it all over the tank. Your cories will find them.

Or put a zucchini slice at the bottom for a day. Boil it for a couple minutes first. They love it.

I don't know if yours are starving or if something else is going on, but that's a tip I got at my lfs. It's hard to lose fish, I love my corys and feel bad for you. A month ago I lost 10 fish in one tank unexpectedly.

The substrate is sand and I think they're getting enough food as I see them eating wafers, Bloodworms etc and they never seemed underweight. The first one that died I had for around 5 years + and the second one around 2-3 years.

I'm wondering if it may be a bacterial infection or internal parasite but I really don't know what's going on

They eat a mixture of hikari algae wafers, tetra Cory shrimp wafers and New Life Spectrum Thera + A
