Corydoras Just Lay Around

I’m not having much luck with my tank lost a bunch of fish at start for no reason I can think of my numbers are 0-0-25 or less after water change on the nitrates. My tetras are fine now after I lost 13 of 17 the other 4 seem to be happy. My problem are with my corydoras they just seem to hide all the time the move a lot during a water change or at night they tend to come out some but I never see them during the day unless I look real hard for them. My reason for getting them is their suppose to be active they where the main fish I wanted in my tank. The biggest thing that aggravates me is when I kept tanks in the past I would fill it with water put some declorinator in it and drop the fish in. I know that was very wrong but I didn’t know any better but my fish always seem to last and thrive then and this time did the full cycle and made sure all was good and can’t seem to get nothing to work.

How many corydoras do you have? They may not be confident enough when kept in low numbers. The more you have the more active they become.

Do you have any territoral or predator fish that could sicken the corys

What kind of corydoras? I know a lot of species prefer cooler water.

What substrate do you have them on? IME they do best on sand.

IMO 25 is a little high for nitrates

.

They have Sand substrate and I bought them a JullI Cory’s and the nitrates where at 25 till I did a water change that’s just what they got to

I would maybe recommend getting more! It may make them more confident in a tank that large. Many cories are also cooler water, maybe try turning it down a couple degrees?

My sterbaI Cory hide when the tank lights are on high. When I turn the lights down they come out and are quite active.

If you have a fish that picks on the Corys they will hide.

I have 6 of them that’s all they had when I bought them

What kind of Cory cats do you have? And what is your tank temp?

6 isn't a bad number. Less than 6 and I'd say get more. Sounds like your neons could use more neons though. Could they be bothered by the loaches? I never kept them.

6 is a great number, unless they are different species of cory

It depends on the type of corys.

IME sterbia are more secretive during lights on.

Peppers are active all day.

Bronze depends on the tank.

Increased numbers always help, especially in a 90.

I would double the numbers.

Got a tankpic ? Could be the surroundings, lighting, substrate and a lot.of unknown reasons.

Try to feed a different way (crumbled / tiny) so they've to scavage.

I agree that the feeding method can change a cory’s behavior. I have 8 Pygmy cories that were acting lethargic but it was just because they figured out that if they stay under the filter current all the food will come right to them. Now I make sure I spread the sinking pellets all around the tank so now my pygmies can have fun playing all around the tank

I often feed "dust". The other fish in aren't intetested and the Corys will scavage hours and hours

I crumble flakes, pellets and freeze dried brineshrimp to dust. Also feed cyclops (frozen) which are tinyyyyyyyy.

The one thing I feed that gets the corys to scavage is Omega One Colour Micro Pellets. Anything else I feed will get picked at by the other fish if I don't target feed them. Those Omega Micro Pellets are really tiny.

I notice a big difference from tank to tank. In my one tank the corys are always out and active and even gather at the front as soon as they sense food is coming. In the other tank, they act skittish, dashing for their hiding spots as soon as I walk towards the tank. It makes me wonder if the "group mentality" can vary from group to group.

Mark,

I have the same experience but attributed it to different types of corys.

But I don’t know that is correct.

Seems if one dashes for cover, the rest do the same thing.

In my sterbia tank they were always skittish. 10-12 months.

I let the vegetation get overgrown.

When I finally cut it back, they stay at the front when I feed. Weird.

It is soooo strange. I have 10 C.schultzeI in a tank which is densely planted. Cover everywhere. They are the most skittish Corys ever. I can't get any close up cause they'll dart through the plants when I try.
