Corydoras injured, lost his tail

This morning I saw my cory hide below the bridge decoration, and he haven't moved until this evening..he was stuck....I thought he was dead at first but I notice he blink...I notice his caudal tail almost gone...I suspect my neon did it but I'm not sure, then I tried to get him out and there's red mark near his dorsal fin ...should I be worried? will neon nip him? he have rapid gill movement but after a while he back to normal....but seems to have hard time swimming.

That looks like a lot of damage for one neon, but it's possible.

What other tank mates are in there with him?
Can you post a picture of the entire tank including the decor?
How many neons do you have total?

As for healing, the best thing I would know to do here is just keep the water in pristine conditions.

no there's 6 neon...the tank has been setup for 2 and half month..so total 6 neon and 4 cories...I never saw them try to attack my cories...and my cories never show any sign of stress or injure...it just my speculation because after he got freed...one neon try to nip his tail once and stop when he see it still moving...will the tail grow back? should I do something about it or just let it be?I have other tank but its not cycled..so I don't wanna risk it

I'd agree that it's unlikely the neons did that much damage, I'd guess it was caused by getting stuck somewhere.
Keep an eye on it for any signs of infection & keep the water pristine, the tail should grow back in time.

how can its tail be torn apart by just getting stuck? could I use the decoration again? or is it too risky?..I don't wanna observe him too much...2 of my cories always swim like bullet when I watch him...dont wanna stress him

Is there a filter he could've gotten his tail stuck in and damaged it? And you'd be surprised what trouble fish will get themselves into.

SORRY GUYS...my grammar is bad...so let me rephrase my top post...he is getting stuck so I try to unstuck him, before unstuck, his tail seems already gone...I think the neons try to take advantage of him not moving to nip his fin

no he stuck in below the bridge decor...its about 2 cm wide...that's what make the red mark because I'm trying to get him out....for the tail I suspect it was neon...100% sure its not the filter

I understand more now why you suspect the neons. I'll let the more experienced members analyze this.

If it got stuck in the decoration don't put the decoration back. Could be neons "scavaged" on te finremains but they'll never cause damage to a Cory. Throw in a Indian Almond leaf or a drop of Esha 2000 to prevent a secundairy infection.

Is there a hospital tank you can move it to so it can recover without the neons picking at him?

what is hospital tank? and are there any difference with normal tank?I have another tank but its not fully cycled

Yes, it's just another spare tank you may have for quarantine purposes or to treat sick fish. Do you have any extra seeded filter media in your main tank you can move over for an instant cycle?

ya its HOB filter with waterfall effect..how much should I move? because my 15 gallon tank is fully stock....I'm afraid it won't be able to handle my main tank bioload

The 15 gallon is your spare tank? What fish are in it?

What size is the main tank and how long has it been cycled?

no,15.7 gallon is my main tank with 4 cories and 6 neon ( a bit overstock I know)..my spare tank is 12 gallon...its been cycled...the tank has been setup for 3 month

el337
  • #17
So, the 12g is not cycled with no fish in it, correct? If you only have one filter cartridge on the 15g, I don't think you can move it without risking the 15 gallon to lose its cycle. You may just need to keep the water extra clean on your main tank and keep a close eye on the cory.

good news the red mark is gone..he still have a hard time swimming with its tail gone...no rapid gill movement or sign of stress...my other cories look confused darting here and there because I removed the decoration which have hiding place...now there only 1 hiding cave for them

maybe I will get some cave or fake plants

when I turn off filter my neon and cories know its feeding time.....only for 5 minutes for them to finish their food

I'd keep it running. They will know it's dinner time anyway.

Yeah I'd keep it on. If they want the food they'll get it ;3

I only have one fish, my Betta. I summon him by poking my finger in the water and wiggling it around, when he investigates, I drop in food.

Not sure if your neons will do that. The cories will do well with a sinking food, as they'll pick it out of the substrate throughout the day.

If you can manage to summon your neons at least, you could put in a sinking food, the neons will eat what they can catch, then the remainder will fall to the substrate for the cories to pick out.

I have SERA catfish chip, sometimes I'm not sure if cories eat it or not, they suck it but not sure if some get into their stomach or not...if its crumble they eat it but spew it in their gill along with sand..I am not worry about my neon as they are already fat..

Sounds like both are well taken care of. Cories can be hard to tell if they're eating or not. As long as there's food in the tank they'll find some way of eating it.

Depends on what kind of catfish chip you're using. Sera has some that are meand for herbivorious catfish. Corys are mainly carnivorious and won't do good on these on the long term.
Check the ones you use.

They will, but don't get any nutrition from them. I'd get another one Axel.
You're not balancing the right ingredients this way.

Agreed! Shrimp pellets are a good staple as well as varying the diet with meaty catfish wafers or sticks and live or frozen foods.

Not familiar with those but check the ingredients. You want at least 38% protein listed. If possible, add in some live and frozen foods too. They really love them.

Oh wow. I have a single cory cat (the other five died) who is mysteriously missing his tail fin at the moment as well. About four days before I noticed the missing fin, he had a dark red pectoral fin. Huh. Was these pictures before or after you noticed his missing fin? It looks like there's still a scrap of tail on your cory, whereas mine was COMPLETELY missing it. He just had a stump Currently he appears to be growing back his tail fin, but it sounds so similar. The only bully fish in my tank right now is a large angelfish.
