I know that corydoras prefer fine sand to dig through, but I just got my new thirty gallon tank and it has gravel. I was hoping to have 6 Corys. I have heard of cories living well in gravel before, and I am wondering if although it is not ideal, I could keep cories with gravel. The gravel is relatively small chunks, and smooth, and black.

I just switched to sand a few months ago. For decades I kept them with gravel and they did just fine. Just make sure the gravel has no sharp edges.

I switched over to sand about a year ago but up until then my corys lived with smooth gravel. I actually wish I had switched sooner though. I love watching them sift through the sand with their snouts instead of trying to dig through rocks.
