Cory fin damage

I have a 45 gallon tank with 3 guppies and 5 Cory cats (2 pandas, 2 small greens, and a full grown green). The last two corys were added almost two weeks ago and I've already lost one of them. The 2 panda corys had tail fins when I got them but one died and the other is now missing the tail fin and the left fin. Who or what could be causing the damage?

Hello Bag...

Fin damage typically comes from something sharp or abrasive in the tank. Examine what you have in there and if it could potentially injure a fish, remove it. Corys are no different than any other fish. They require pure water conditions to be healthy. Think about your water change routine. How much do you remove and how often? If you still leave most of the old, dirty water in the tank, you're not changing enough. Traces of nitrogen in the water stress fish and weaken their immune system. A good diet with a variety of flakes, freeze dried, wafers, pellets and frozen is nearly as important as clean water.

Sounds like finrot. Noticed this can be very progressive. If the tissue is "eaten" away too far, it won't grow back. Clean water + strong antibacterial med / antibiotic (not Melafix or Esha 2000).

I ran out of test strips (on my shopping list) so I'm not sure what the parameters are. I do a 25%-30% water change weekly. There are only plastic plants and rocks in the tank so maybe the plants are the problem? Only the panda Cory has a problem. Everyone else in the tank looks healthy with no damage.

"Tailless" my Venezuelan was the only one of 20 that had finrot when I got him. Treated with JBL Ektol Fluid. Infection gone, but tailfin wouldn't grow back.

I suggest getting the API liquid test kit instead of the strips since you'd get far more accurate readings. Much cheaper than strips in the long run as well.

Sounds like it could be fin rot. Can you post a pic?

I will definitely look into getting the liquid test kit then. Unfortunately when my husband got up this morning our last panda was dead so I don't have any pictures. Should I treat the tank for fin rot or just monitor everyone else for signs?

I would just watch the others closely.

Sorry for your loss.
