Corner sponge filters

Anyone have experience with corner sponge filters? Aquaneat makes a nano sized one that I'm looking at. I'm considering it for a 2.5 gallon shrimp tank that I'll be setting up and like how it being in the corner gives me more space in the nano tank. But I wonder if having it in the corner causes less flow that would make the cylinder option better, though it takes up more space.

Anyone with experience with these want to offer their two cents?

Actually, i have wondered the same myself. Who knows if/when i try one as they are only available locally in the standard cylinder form.

I'm looking at them on Amazon and they are around the same price as the cylinder ones. It's really only about the space saving. If I get one, I'll let you know how it does.

I was asking BA a few weeks ago about those. They look pretty space saving. Im curious too.

I may have to take one for the team and try it out just so I can review it for everyone else! :)

I ha e sponge filters in every tank...would certainly consider switching if they work at least the same. Running out of ideas to hide them in stuff and not take up extra room!

Edit: just remembered, i think at least 1 of my LFSs has a tank or two with the corner ones in them. Might have to make it my new mission(,excuse to go) to go to the stores and ask them! Lol

Because we always need an excuse to go to an LFS...

I gotta have something to tell my wife if she asks "why" lol

Do what I do...just incorporate it into some other errand. "Hey honey, I need to go to the Menards for some furnace filters. Since I'm there, I'm going to stop at Petland really quick."

Well see, thats an all day trip right there for me....!!!

From a performance perspective, the cylindrical sponge is better than the triangular sponge filter (or a 1/4 cylinder) designed to fit in a corner. The reason is that the water flow will always follow the path of least resistance.

With a cylinder, the distance from the outside of the sponge to the center is equal such that water will flow evenly through the structure. I realize this is ignoring the top and bottom of the sponge, but that exists for both shapes.

If the corner filter is placed close to the glass walls, the flow through the those sides of the filter will be impeded. If the filter is placed away from the wall to eliminate that problem, then you have the opposite issue. The distance from the center of the flat sides to the center tube will be shorter than the distance from the corners to the center tube. Thus, water will flow through that portion of the sponge with the least resistance. With a new sponge, that will be the shortest distance until the sponge starts to fill with debris. Then it is whatever portion of the sponge is least plugged.

That being said, if the choice for a nano tank is between a larger corner filter and a smaller diameter cylindrical filter taking up similar space, it probably does not make a lot of difference which you use.

Yeah, you've pretty much just articulated what I was thinking the results might be. I'm thinking this may not be the time to give it a try.
