Corn Snake Exhibit Build

That is a huge meal! Make sure her basking temperatures are on par, as she needs to be able to digest that in a normal amount of time even though it is bigger. If a meal sits too long with them being at the wrong temps, it can make them sick. Large meals can also end up being brought back up as well, and you do not want that. I have had it happen once after three days and it is now my ultimate gross-out experience, and it also isn't great for the snake.

We normally run her heat lamp too for a couple days after feeding her. Definitely are this time. Thank you for your advice though. Probably going to go back to pinkies and just do multiples (like 2).

Unfortunately it looks like NaginI regurgitated the fuzzy tonight (2 days after eating it). Right beside of it looks like where she had a "movement". Does that mean she got something out of it? When should we try to feed her again? Definitely going back to pinkies after this. We have one more in the freezer.

PetSmart here sells frozen mice of all sizes. Would a snake eat them?

She may have gotten some nourishment out of it, but it wouldn't have been a 'square meal' so to speak as it would be missing needed components. The feces could be part of this meal, but more likely was leftover from the last one.

In snakes, regurge is always a bad event, but at least with her you know why it happened. Skipping the next meal is recommended for adults, but I'm not sure about juvis since they are smaller and eat more often. If it were one of mine, I would give it a week and try again with something small.

Yeah that's where we get her food. For some dumb reason though, the local one (where we bought her) doesn't sell the smallest ones. The one over an hour away does though. So since we were wondering if she could handle the next size up anyway. Tried it. No, she can not.

Thank you. So, probably go back to only one pinkie next feeding? I'm kind of wondering if even 2 of them is a good idea now.

I would go with just one for a few more feedings and see how she does before trying two. It has to do with the density of the meal - two smaller otems are much easier to digest than one big one. Especially when making the jump from pinks to fuzzies, there is a lot more bone and muscle to try and digest!

NaginI started to come back out of hiding last night. Today she seemed to be actively hunting in her tank. So we fed her the last pinkie. She struck with purpose when she grabbed it, and very enthusiastically devoured it. She seemed so happy to have an easy meal, and she's not having a hard time moving with the smaller bulge. Planning on going to get her more Saturday before her next feeding. My girlfriend said something about us trying a small feeding of a single pinkie every 4-5 days instead of one big weekly feeding.

NaginI is doing very well with her twice weekly feedings so far. We fed her a pinkie on 6-27 (Wednesday before last), another on 7-1 (this last Sunday), and another just now on 7-5. No more feeding or digestive complications to report.

She's also starting to noticably grow. I believe she's gained almost 2 inches since we got her on 5-7 (right at two months ago). When I pick her up now, and can feel a tiny bit more weight, even as small as creature as she is. Keep in mind, this is with us having problems getting her to feed for over two weeks. That in itself is a fourth of the time we've had her. Now, with feeding twice a week, I'm super excited to see how she grows. Especially after I read this article about some 9th grade kids that performed an experiment.....

Start: They started by obtaining 8 corn snakes of random genders from the same clutch. They recorded the length and grams of each snake. All were similar in both measurements, being so young.

Control: Snakes #1-4 were fed once a week for the duration of the experiment (believe it was a semester course). Measurements of length and grams were recorded on the same day each week.

Experiment: Snakes #5-8 were fed twice weekly, and same measurements were recorded on same day each week as control group.

Results: I don't remember at what week results became obviously different, but at the end, the gains in length AND grams in #5-8 were almost double the gains in #1-4.

I found this very exciting. Of course, here's a couple obligatory pictures after putting her back up from feeding.

NaginI shed again today guys!

This is the second one with us. Here's a picture comparing her first and second shed skins to show her growth.

She only missed one feeding during this shed. However, today was scheduled feeding day, so she was congratulated with a pinkie. I love this little critter.

So where’s the pic of her in her new skin? Or at least tell me about it. I had a timber rattler crossing my bare legs. She had just shed her skin. You forget just how beautifully colored they are! She was a big heavy lovely beauty! So tell me!

Well honestly, I didn't get to have a real close look because it was feeding day and I was trying to not handle her a lot. I can tell you her eyes are changing color though. She was really shiny too.

Hello everybody.

Can't sleep so let's liven up this thread. Couple things to share. First, NaginI has successfully made the transition from feeding on pinkies to fuzzies. A while back actually. I just haven't been on here for a while. Second, I just got a better heat lamp for her. It's a dual lamp, so it can run a day and a night bulb. I've got it on a timer system much like my fish tanks. She now gets 12 hours of "day", and 12 hours of "night" without loosing the temperature gradient in her tank. I'm pretty excited about it.

Whoops, forgot pictures.

Just a few pictures I haven't shared yet in no particular order.

And a picture of her new nightlight running which I still think is strange looking.

Nice little corn you have!

I have a couple of snakes also. I can tell you what my snakes love is a piece of the flatter cork bark to lay under.

Seems the snugger the hide is the more they like it. I also have a corn but I also have a Mexican black Kingsnake.

Definitely makes sense, because she prefers the smallest log hut. Thanks for the tip! What do your snakes look like? I'd love to see some pictures if you want to share.

NaginI has officially reached the 2 foot marker! Which also means she's roughly 2 inches away from having doubled in length since we got her in May. Just wanted to share.

Also an obligatory picture .

NaginI has finally reached the point that she can no longer go to her old favorite hiding spots. Especially after feeding, she use to curl up in the artificial plants suction cupped to the walls. They can no longer support her though. That being said, I used an artificial tree that I actually bought for one of the aquariums to rescape her tank a bit. Not sure how I feel about it. What do you guys think?

Yeah. Sometimes it takes me a bit to get used to change. I think it's filled in better now though. You wouldn't believe how hard it was to position that thing in a 20 Long though with all those wide reaching branches.

Nice update. I actually read it the other night, but was so tired I forgot. There's a Metro Reptile Expo in White Plains, NY that I'll be going to. Maybe I'll get one myself, if I don't find what I'm looking for (musk turtles). Whatever happens, I'm definitely looking at some snakes.

I want another snake myself. Thinking about a stereotypical ball python next. I'm not ready for that yet though.

Hey everybody!

Decided to share an update on this little one, and try to get some info.

NaginI has reached, and passed the 3 foot marker. I'm estimating her to be about 38 inches now. That's a big change from 13 inches when we got her.

More exciting news. I finally managed to get her an upgrade enclosure. You can see from past pictures on the thread that her little 20 long was getting pretty cramped. Especially with her being longer than it is. She's in a 40 breeder now, and hopefully that's all she'll ever need. Here it is.

IMG_20191114_140722860.jpg

Here's a funny picture of her "hiding". That's probably a little less than half her body exposed, but her head and tail are covered.

IMG_20191115_123547077_HDR.jpg

Besides all this, she's still eating and shedding on a regular basis. However, I do have a question for other scaley keepers.

I've been feeding her 2-3 mouse fuzzies per feeding for a while now. Both because it's been working and because I'm trying to get all the fuzzies I have stocked up used. She can easily eat what is sold at PetSmart as a "small mouse" now though. Obviously I know this means she's ready to upsize in food items. In my research on this topic, I've seen that a lot of people prefer to feed their snakes rats because they have greater nutritional value. Something about being leaner with less far content. However, I've also seen where some only feed their thicker bodied snakes rats, and keep their smaller bodied snakes (like cornsnakes) on mice. Apparently, cornsnakes get chubby really easily is why I'm wondering about all this. However, I find this very confusing because if they get chubby easy, then why are they known for having a faster metabolism for a snake?

Anyway, what do you guys think? Get bigger mice or get small size rats (like fuzzies)?

Just sharing some more pictures of Nagini. She's grown so much.

Gypsy13 you said you enjoyed the pic a while back of her on the couch. Here's a little recap for some kind of size scale.

Everything is going okay. Luckily you don't have to buy food for a snake that often. I did have to get her a new bulb for her light unexpectedly because the old one blew out. That was a quick in an out trip though. Hope everything is going okay for you too.
