Yes, dwarf puffers are fresh water, but tend to be a bit aggressive. Also, you would have to have a separate tank/bowl for raising snails for them/it to eat. They're pretty cool though, and stay small, but they are known to nip fins

They are freshwater yes! You could have 4 in a 20 gallon if it is heavily planted!!

I suggest you do your own research in the little guys to check water parameters and needs against what you can supply but they can eat a diet of frozen foods with thd odd snail thrown in every now and again!

Awesome. Are they ok with other dwarf puffers? Will they nip the other one or will they just nip other fish? Sorry for all the questions

Are you familiar with the nitrogen cycle? Dwarf puffers aren't a beginner fish.

Yeah I would say they are for somebody with at least 6 months of quality fish keeping behind them and an established tank ready to put the puffers in.

Also somebody who is willing to go out of their way to care for their fish

You could have one puffer and just have it heavily decorated or constantly changing in general

But yes for the most part!

I do have a 60 gal that I have had for a while and I will go out of my way for my fish. I normally do water changes in my 60 gal every week. I am interested in the puffers but what are some other fish that that you think would go well in the 20 gal if I do not go with the puffers? Thanks!

A big school of celestial pearl danios with a school of Pygmy cories on the bottom looks really nice!

I really like snails and shrimp. They add a LOT of personality to your tanks are are really fun to watch. I like having blue/ orange Bettas because they POP out in my 20 gallon tall heavily planted tanks. If you have lost of plants. I would suggest guppies and Dalmatian mollies (I have both), because they pop out against the plants in your tank. I have a giant golden mystery snail, that climes on my plants and eat algae.

So my main point is, get what pop out against your green plants. ( Trust me, It really catches the eye)

Pygmy cories dwell in the middle of the water column.
