Constantly Green Tank

Brandywine
  • #1
I started my 75 gallon about 4 months ago. About a month ago the water went green. No matter what I do or how much I change the water it goes green within 24 hours. I haven't changed anything but the tank is always green. The pic is from today and I just did a water change 2 days ago! The Ph is spot on and the fish are "happy". The strange part is the fish get lethargic and not as lively when the water is clean. As soon as it goes green they get active. Idk what to do. Any help would be appreciated.

Too much light I'm guessing. How many hours and at what intensity?

How long do you keep the light on?

Usually from when I work up until I go to bed. 12 hours? I thought that could be the issue at first but why would it happen out of the blue? I've had the same light on my tanks before and this tank as well. This just started happening a month ago.

Did you introduce anything new into your tank? Decor, fish, food? Are you aware of your tap water changing??

I introduced new fish around the same time this started to happen. Our tap is the same to my knowledge. Could it be the new fish??

Maybe they brought in a strange type of algae with them, Or threw the tank off balance somehow.

This is why you quarantine fish

I would follow these steps.

There are also medications you can buy if it doesn't improve

Try doing a 72 hour blackout. (basically turning off the lights, and cover the aquarium with something like a blanket to prevent light from going in).

Oh boy that looks nasty. I agree with the blackout method as suggested. If the black out doesn't work try a UV light to eliminate that algae.
