has anyone done this? I got a new light fixture and it kinda lights up the aquarium and the back of my wall, which is in viewing range of my bed. just wondering if anyone has found a DIY sort of way to block light coming out the sides(and up) and forced only downwards in the aquarium. I tried duct tape but that didnt work too well. any materials and such ideas you have. thank you

first pic I took with flash on. the glare is from that. the second is my problem

Is that the beamswork DA? Which one?

How about some black construction paper and just taping it to the back panel?

I have a large tank and the way that I have dealt with the issue of light reflecting of the surface of the water and back into my rook is by using:
  1. a hood that covers around two inches of the surface of the water (top level - if the water level drops more than two inches, then I start getting the same effect out the sides of the tank.
  2. background foil that restricts light reflecting off the wall of the house behind the tank and coming back into the room.
Some people make their own hoods, while others buy them with their tanks. You can find them on Amazon by searching aquarium hood - will show you some oddly shaped hoods that house fluorescent lighting (with a bulge) but the are some as well.

I paint the outside of my tanks with acrylic paint. It's very easy to take off if you don't want it anymore. What size tank do you have?

For the light reflecting off the top, go to your dollar store and pick up a large foam board (from the school/ office supply store) and cut to size to fit on top of your glass.

Yes this is what I do. I use a black foam board, cut it down to make a custom canopy, taping it together to make a box .. leave some ventilation holes. Doesn't look as nice as a wood canopy but much cheaper and I won't go blind when looking at tmy fish from above. It works for me.
