A pearl is not suitable for a 20. Try a dwarf gourami instead.

I keep my pearl gouramis with rams, no problem, but in a 45 gallon tank. The 20 is just too small.

A dwarf gourami as Jaysee suggested should be fine. Gouramis generally inhabit the middle to upper levels of the water, while rams inhabit the bottom mainly. Also, from what I understand of rams, unless you have a breeding pair, they do not get aggressive, even with fish that inhabit the same swimming level they do.
