Comet Goldfish - Injury? Growth? Infection? Parasite?

HI everyone,

Been a while since I posted. Lots has changed.

So long story short, I inherited my sisters goldfish as she moved out of the province. I've been fish-keeping for 3 years now and have 3 tanks. I'm a member of Fishlore and was suggested to check this forum out.

For now they're in a 75 gallon Bow Front, which I know is not what they should be in. They came to me in a 54g Bow Front so I immediately upgraded with what was available. Let's not discuss this, they'll be moved to a suitable environment in the spring.

Fish:
1x Large Ryukin 9" (Fancy J) 7-8yr
1x Comet Goldfish 11" (Goldie) 8-9yr
1x Bristlenose Pleco 5.5" (Un-named) 6yr

About 5 weeks ago we noticed Goldie had an "injury" over her right nostril. It looked like maybe she hit the handle of the glass lid while eating and or playing, we've watched it happen previously but never saw any injuries. Nonetheless we lowered the water level and continued to monitor it.

As the days and weeks progressed it grew, changed colours and imo continued to get worse. It seems to be busting out of itself while it grows. Little flakes of "dead skin" falls off every couple of days. It's been red, turned almost white and has been purple-ish in colour.

None of the fish show any signs of being in distress, everyone is super active and eating normally. It doesn't seem it be bothering her but it's weirding me out.

My water is always immaculate due to my obsessiveness for the hobby.

I do water changes of 20% twice a week on this tank and keep spreadsheets on all the tests I do before every water change, for all of my tanks.

Filtration:
2x Penguin 350 (700ghp)
1x 75 gallon HydroSponge
1x MaxiJet Powerhead

Tank Parameters:
0ppm
0ppm
5ppm
7.0pH

Tap Parameters:
0.0ppm
0.0ppm
0.0ppm
7.2pH

I think I covered everything, sorry if I missed any helpful info. If I did just ask.

Please look at my photos, hopefully someone can shed some light on this and ease my mind a bit.

It's not uncommon for goldfish to get tumors like that. I don't think there is too much you can do other than make sure she isn't too uncomfortable with it. I've heard of people surgically removing tumors in koi but those are usually super expensive fish and it's worth the trouble/cost of the surgery.

As a side note, holly cow those are some monster goldfish! Good thing your have all that filtration in there.

I've never heard of anything like this, which isn't terribly surprising since I haven't been at it a year yet. I just wanted to say, what impressive and beautiful goldfish! If you can't find your answer here, there are some incredibly knowledgeable goldfish-keepers that hang out on Koko's Goldfish. I really wish you luck!

Thanks! I went to the forum and posted my question there also. The site looks like it'll serve me well for these Goldfish.

Probably a growth from a parasite, have you added any new fish to the tank? Also what have you been feeding it? And how frequent are your water changes?

1. No new fish. These three have been together for years.

2. I feed them Blood Worms, Brine Shrimp, Algae Wafers, Med Pellets and assorted vegetables that are vinegar washed then blanched before serving.

3. Re-read my post please.

Furthermore the absolute most unlikely diagnosis would be a Parasite in my opinion as I keep my 4 Aquariums in PRISTINE condition vetting EVERYTHING that goes into them. I may be new to this site but I am far from a noob in this hobby. Thanks for your opinion though.

Hmm well, that is strange. There are disease that do look similar to what your fish has. Very similar to hole in the head disease.

Hummm well, I think this is quite the opposite of that my friend. It's more like a scab. When some flakes off or it cracks open I can see the nostril and the tissue under. There's no abnormal holes or discolouration under the lump.

Are you specifically stating this looks like "Hole in the Head" disease or something similar, if so what?

Furthermore, none of the conditions in which "Hole in the Head" disease usually occurred meet my conditions in which this issue arose.

I think you're underestimating what I know, what I have researched and the quality in which I keep my tanks let alone the inhabitants of them.

Again, thank you for your opinion.
