Cold water fish above ground pond ideas?

Been wanting to keep rice fish (or maybe other cold tolerant fish, not sure how low rice fish can go) outside, but I’ve got some questions. Was thinking about wrapping a water barrel, tote, or stock tank in insulation, and building a wood structure around it (just for aesthetic reasons) and keeping the fish in that with sponge filtration. Could sponge filtration be enough for approximately 55 gallons? Do I need heat or just to prevent the top from icing over? And maybe a doubt question but can stock rank heaters be used for fish?

They make pond heaters too. They seem to be more efficient for your application. I missed were you were from on your chicken post.

Low temp looks to be 70. What about mosquitoe fish. My grandparents kept them in rain barrels here in pa. Not sure how they ever made it threw winter but they did.

I wonder if you put it against the chicken coop and closed that side in if they would generate enough heat to keep the temp up.
