Funny Clown Plecos - This time, she just bought it!

Lexi03 and I were supposed to be grocery shopping today. So we got our two boys ready and headed out. We had a few places to stop before getting to the grocery store, and one of them happened to be petsmart. She went in by herself because all she said she was buying was some stress coat, prime, and a glass top for the 55g.

She opens the door to our suv and proclaims, "we will have to grocery shop tomorrow, we need to head home." I roll my eyes and ask her, " what did we get now?" She pulls the plastic bag out and exclaims, "they had clown plecos!" The little guy she got is about 2" at the moment, and is sooooo cute! I am not sure what tank he will end up in, but we'll figure that out later!

I will try to take a photo tomarrow, he just got finished aclimating, and is hiding out for now. He will be in our 55gal until the 125 is set up then we will be playing a massive game of musical tanks. When all is said and done he will be in our 30gal with green fire tetas and a pair of orange flash cockatoo cichlids.

We usually go to the fish store together, normally we would both got in, but it was pouring down rain and my older boy is out of school for spring break and the younger one was cranky because he missed his nap, didn't really want to drag two grumpy boys through the store.

I tryed to get a photo of Fred today, he is still hiding out. I put a piece of zuccinI by the cave he is in tonight, I think I saw him nibbling on it when I came in the room, but then he backed back into his cave. I have a piece of driftwood in the tank, he hasn't seemed interested in it yet.

Are clowns hard to get there?

I'm sure I could have ordered one online, but this is the first time I have seen one in a store. We have 1 LFS that carries Bristlenoses and commons and a petsmart that normally only has commons. I don't go in Petco often, but they only have 9 or so tanks, I havn't seen any plecos there before( and I would not buy one if I had, my Petco is awful).

Petsmart had them in one of their special buy tanks, the lady said they only carry the stocks in those tanks a couple months at a time, then the next group of limited time only fish comes in.

wow Petland here always has clown pleco's..... smart cause its more suitable with the small size for people with small tanks as long as they have drift wood.

upade and questions

Well Fred came out of his cave sometime last night, I can see a path he ate through on the small bit of algae in the tank ( I really do Hate T8 fixtures). He was on his driftwood when I goot up this morning. He didn't really eat enough zuchinnI to notice any missing. He hid again when I got up to the tank, so no photos.

Now for the question, what is it supposed to look like when a pleco swims? He has me worried because when he goes to hide, he doesn't really swim, he kinda hops along the substrate.

Mine simply swims along the bottom like a flying carpet.

Indeed!

I love my little Clown Pleco! He has such a 'tude LOL Can't wait to see him! Mines out a lot, because he's got a nice big piece of wood that he can hide in, but they are good at shoving them selves up for days on end lol

Good morning,

Here is what I found by clicking on Butterfly/Carols link:

I always push an algae wafer into a slice of zucchinI for my Plecos. This gives the Pleco a chance to eat the wafer before it's stolen by other fish.

The fish in the photo above is in the same spot every morning waiting for his slice.

As for my juvenile Bristle Nose Pleco, I can add the slice to the tank and she is on it within 2 minutes, every morning.

Congrats on the new Clown Pleco you two! Looking forward to photos/videos.

Lol I actually considered that name in my head, but then I decided it would be a little weird to come home and ask if bozo ate today.

Butterfly: we have drift wood for him but the info I looked up said they needed veggies too or they might start eating plants... not sure which site it was now, I was in a hury to make sure we had the right foods for him when we got home.

Ken: thanks, hopefully I can snagg a photo soon, he was out and about a little more yesterday evening, but my phone battery was too low to take a photo.

Definitely second that! I clean more wood bits from my gravel than I do poop

I know they are wood eaters primarily but I have a lot of people tell me they will eat certain vegtables aswell & it's good to give them vegtable occasionally.

How do you offer the veggies? If you offer them raw, try boiling them till the sink. If you off them boiled, try offering them raw. I'd also recommend New Life Spectrum Algae Wafers (That goes to you, too, Lexi!)

Figured everyone knew they needed wood but wanted to make sure. Never hurts to offer a varity of foods

This is the one most often offered in stores

But there are others that go by this common name also

I use NLS wafers already for my shrimp, cories and ottos( although all the other fish like to pick at them too). I always feed the veggies raw. Its not a big deal if he does not eat the zucchini, that just means more for the other tanks, my ottos and shrimps love it!

Butterfly: Fred is either the fish in the second or third link, I will have to stare at him a bit to figure it out.
