Clown Loach size

Some sites I've been to say that a single clown loach grows to about 12-18" in the wild and only about 6-7" in home aquariums. An example of a site that says they grow to 17" in the wild and max 7" in home aquariums is
I was just wondering if all this stuff is true or just a hoax to get people to buy clown loaches?

I have a friend in California who is donating his seven, in excess of a foot long, clown loaches to the Steinhart Aquarium come spring.
They are all over 20 years of age.
