Clove Oil to Anesthetize Fish

Hey guys! I plan on buying some clove oil soon (to anesthetize fish) and was wondering if any of you guys have used it. I was planning on doing a "test run" without performing a surgery, or removing anything. My fish are in top shape. Would this cause any problems for the fish that I don't know about? Your opinions would be much appreciated!

HI and welcome. I have only heard of using clove oil to euthanize a fish-never for anesthetizing one. Others will need to respond but welcome anyway!

Just out of curiosity, what are you needing to anesthetize them for? (I'm thinking some Frankenstein type creations.... a betta / dojo loach would be intriguing...)

Actually I was planning to do an Oscar/Neon Tetra hybrid. In all seriousness, I would like to know how to "put a fish under" in case my koi develop any ulcers or if any of my fish get fin rot. Would rather know how to do it before something bad happens.

I have heard it is used to put bigger fish under for surgery. It is also used to euthanize fish in higher doses.

I would kind of wait on that, were I you; the old saying is that no surgery needing G.A. can be considered to be safe, as the G.A. is the greatest danger, so try to avoid trying it just on the basis that it might come in handy some rainy day.
I do like the neon oscar mix, tho, sort of reminds me of a great British movie, The Mouse That Roared-rick

Hi,
I have seen the method used on larger fish.

I know there is a video on youtube that shows a large fish receiving treatment for an issue with its caudal fin.

There is also a link in this thread:

Too, a search of Fishlore for Fish Surgery returns a few results.

NOTE to all: If you are going to post videos/articles/links related to this topic, please ensure they are of the medical procedure nature, and that the content is suitable for young memberrs. As a general rule, post the video number, not the full link (e.g. just the bit after the v= in the url).
Those who want to view the material can do so without the video being embedded in the thread.

Clove Oil is widely used in the UK by the online suppliers to transport fish.
I have received fish that are in a state of torpia induced by the oil, and they have all seemed to recover very quickly, and without any lasting effects to my knowledge, and this has included many wild caught fish that are sensitive to this kind of thing.
My concerns would be that if you don't know precisely what you are doing with this stuff, then leave it alone, as the amounts required are very small indeed to induce Torpia.

I have used it to euthanize.
It works well, so don't mess with it if you don't know how. If surgery is needed find a doctor that works with fish.
