Cloudy water in new tank

yyxyfish

Today I bought a new tank, 5.5 gallon. I already have my betta in a different tank but I’m planning on moving him to the one I bought today. I got aquarium sand, dumped it in my tank, added water but it was really clumped together and floated at the top so I kept stirring and emptying the water out. Once I finished, there were very little (small) clumps of sand together but my water was cloudy. What should I do?

Hi yyxyfish,
Welcome to fishlore.
Unfortunately all new sand needs a lot of rinsing to remove the dust.
It may be easier to remove most of the sand and rinse outside in a bucket?

Rinse outside with a garden hose until the water you pour of is clear.

Are you familiar with the nitrogen cycle?

Thank you! That sounds like a good idea. In response to your question, I have a good idea of the nitrogen cycle.
