Help! My fish tank has been turning cloudy with a reddish tint for weeks. Ive had this tank for decades with no issues. There is a reddish tint. I have one 10 yr old goldfish here. Ive done a 50o/o water change every coupco of days and this comes back. I bought new filters too. The one thing I did was use an algicide because it was getting bad. Then the next week cloudy water. Ill never use chemicals again. Also ive vacumed my bottom. And taken out all decor.
I'm at a loss. I'm going to have to completely take apart this tank. I don't know what's going on???

I just wanted to take a moment to welcome you to FishLore.

Hopefully someone that has used that product will come along soon and can let you know how long you can expect this to continue or what to do to speed up the process.

It is possible that Seachem Purigen would help you clean this up. You just add the pouches of it to your filter and it should help.

Welcome Sorry you are here because of your cloudy tank though.

What is the pH of your tank?

What kind of algae were you trying to eradicate? If it was green water, the purple tint could be dead algae maybe?

I've seen a purple tint before in one of my tanks, I think it was dying cyanobacteria.

Like above, it seems with the green algae gone it let another bacteria or red algae to get an edge. How about some plants to help take nitrates out of the water? Goldfish produce a lot and things like anarchis can bring it down.

Agree^^ It's already positively bacterial. When you remove one, it allows another to take over. Live plants would help to balance it (take the place of algae). Although we don't like to see it in our tanks, it is actually beneficial to them.

Floating plants are great, like water lettuce or frogbit, but your goldfish might have a few snacks. It might grow faster than he eats it though if you get enough. My water lettuce grows like crazy, just saying. Another option is to add plants growing emersed out of the tank like pothos. You just snip a piece off a houseplant, stick the stem part in the tank with leaves above water and it will sprout roots in a couple days. I also use lucky bamboo growing emersed.

You changed the filter? Did you ditch the media in the old filter? What is ammonia, nitrite and nitrate pls?
