Quick question! Am I supposed to clean the filter and inserts every time I do a water change?

Usually once a week I'll swish them around in ol tank water. Never use tap water or freshly declorinated water, it severely damages your colony of beneficial bacteria, and may possibly kill it off completely!

OK thanks for the advice. What about the actual canister and tubes?

Only if they look noticeably gunked up. No need to clean them every water change.

Yes ClearEyes is correct! Maybe once ever month or two depending on stock levels for your tank. If it looks dirty, clean it! Your filter is key for keeping your fish :) the dirtier it is means the less water it will filter.

I also clean my filter materials weekly.
