Cleaning/Water changes

I’ve had my tank set up for around two weeks. I’m cycling it right now. I’ve added Tetra SafeStart (yesterday), and I’ve been adding food to try to speed up the process. When I do water changes, the water still has a lot of food/nasties in it. I don’t know if the gravel is just good at hiding it (even though I’m cleaning it), or I’m not cleaning correctly. How can I get this old food out? Thanks!

Do you have a gravel vac? You may be adding too much food.

I have a siphon if that counts and I probably should be adding a little more food. Thanks!

Are you using it as your ammonia for the cycle? Are there fish in there?

You still need to add a ammonia source for the SafeStart. You dont need to be changing water just yet. Just make sure the ammonia level is up to a certain level. Do you have a test kit at all? You could get some regular non scented cleaning ammonia, Its easier and less messy than fish food.
