Cleaning hood

I am trying to figure out what to use to clean my hoods. They are gross. I don't know why it has built up on there so much. I'm trying to add a picture but it isn't giving me the option.

I don't know if I should just put it in the sink to soak for a while then go at it with a green srubby or what.

Is it green? If so it's caused by water splashing and lots of humidity, mine does it above the air stones, I clean mine with hot water, as long as it's rinsed well after I would be ok with some chemicals as it doesn't go in the tank itself, just be careful it doesn't damage the plastics.

Here is what it looks like. I don't know if it is splash up and drying or what it is.

I hope that pic is a joke. If not, you shouldn't own a fish tank. Sorry

Is that the underside??? Fresh water tank or salt water if that's fresh water how often do you change ur water that looks like a lot of build up of something, possibly mould that has then dried out. Whatever you do, don't let that get near your water! Good luck with the clean and don't forget to unplug before starting

No, that is on the top of the hood. Outside. About once a week. Freshwater. It has done this since I set it up. I don't understand why though. That is what I'm trying to figure out. I get a lot of moisture on the top of the hood from the openings for the filters and where I had my auto feeder.

Wow okkid. Clearly coming here for help isn't okay unless you know everything about fish.

I had to move my tank and aaw this. I take care of my fish and haven't lost any. I check my water parameters, do water changes and clean the tank.

The tank I was given before this had the same build up on it before I got the tank. The person knew a lot about fish, even worked at a fish store.

If the best I am going to get is quit owning fish, I'm done.

Thanks for no help.

Sorry my comment offended you.

If you clean your tank, you wouldn't have started this thread. Your "fish store guy" could know a lot about fish, but maybe not maintenance. You should catch this instantly and not let it even get close to what it is.

Common sense is take the stuff off and clean it. Google works well too.

Kind Regards.

Looks like you have a lot of calcium and proteins in your water. I'm not sure if clr is safe but you could use vinegar to dissolve it. Just soak it a couple hours or so and it should slide right off.

I think you will find it is possibly the hardness in your water, the more hardness the more minerals and therefore a quicker build up, there is very little to prevent it but as suggested above a food soak in vinegar would help. I only asked about the water changes as if the tank is only topped up which does happen (don't know how the fish survive) then the concentration will rise as the water evaporates. Good luck in the cleaning.
