Clawed Frog Cloudy Eye

Tank size is 40 gallons, with 5 African clawed frogs that I’ve had for over seven years. No injuries or diseases in that whole time, they’re all very healthy!

I’ve been on vacation for two weeks and was busy in school this last week (my parents have been taking care of the pets) so I’m not sure exactly when it happened. But last night I noticed one of my African clawed frogs had a cloudy eye, almost like a cataract.

I was wondering if anyone had seen this before. Is she blind in that eye? Is it just an injury that will clear up? Anything I should be doing for her? She doesn’t seem to be in pain or having problems finding her way around, just being her normal froggy self.

Glaucoma, an injury, or a tumor/cancer are my guesses. Amphibians are quite resilient so it might be nothing or it might be something she can still live a full life with.

Should I consider taking her to the vet to get checked for a tumor? She’s a very healthy frog so I assume she’ll be able to recover from an injury easily.

That's really up to you. It's hard to find vets that deal with most aquarium animals. And it will cost many times more than what you paid for the frog to take her.

I’ll probably wait a few weeks and see how she does. If it gets worse I’ll probably bring her to the vet. I actually have a reptile vet that I bring my geckos to, and he says he’s seen frogs before so he’ll most likely be willing to try it.
