So the Cory eggs didn't make it but I got a huge batch today and many seem to be sort of tan rather than white. I have them all floating with an air stone so here's hoping some survive!

I also found 1 lone Amano in the tank today! There is still one MIA but I'm glad I didn't murder all of them!

I also have seen some young shrimplets in my cherry tank! Here's hoping their population finally takes off!

Oh, sorry the others didn't make it but I'm crossing my fingers for this batch!

Yeah they all eventually got fuzzy ... I read up on them before it I think I'll read again to be sure.
Coradee do you have any tips for me?

Congrats on the eggs, hope you get some fry from this batch.
It seems like you're doing ok so far, if the eggs are going a creamy brown colour then they sound viable, good luck

Yes they are! There are a few that are whitish, does this mean those didn't/won't make it? I changed some water today with a baster. I used water from the tank it's floating in. Today is day 2.

The ones that are staying white are likely infertile & will probably fungus, I'd remove them so they don't affect the rest of the eggs

I have Cory fry! Look at those little wigglers! There are still several left to hatch but everyone seems to be doing well so far.

So out of roughly 45 eggs I have counted 30-35 fry! They are hard to see on white sand! Lol all doing well so far!

I also discovered a baby Cory that somehow survived on its own ... it's so cute!! I had seen a random fry a couple weeks ago, I guess, and tried to catch it but figured it got sucked up in the vacuum since I never saw it again. I check buckets for fry and shrimplets before dumping and didn't see it but just figured I missed it. Guess not!

Oh! I also stopped by petco today to see if they had any shrimp and replenished my Amano colony with 10 "ghost" shrimp! lol I got a couple pretty dark cherries too to help diversify my cherry colony and hopefully really help get it going. I've been seeing some bigger shrimplets as well as some that are quite a bit smaller so hopefully there is some breeding going on!

I'm always amazed at how cory fry hatch and survive on their own in tanks.

I saw some spots on the glass where some eggs had been eaten off. There was one lone egg on some nearby moss that I threw in with the fry. Don't know how I missed the eggs!

Well, I kept losing a few Cory fry every day so I just released the ones that were left into the tank. There are surely enough hiding places for them to survive! The line baby Cory is growing and doing well and being out and about much more as it gets bigger. It's so cute. Definitely keeping that one!

Hey el337, look what I just found! Something is definitely going on in this tank because my walls are covered in Cory eggs and my filter is covered in Nerite eggs!

I've moved the Cory eggs to a tub with air stone. Here's hoping this batch does better than the last. I need to get my banana worm culture refed because it's slacking off lately.

In the pics I count 116 eggs! I'm curious to see how many hatch and make it! Oh yeah, there were about 5 on a leaf too.

Haha your corys must be having a good ole time in your tank! LOL

Nerite snail eggs I could do without. My front glass is nearly covered and is such an eyesore!

I don't mind them so far ... I wish they would hatch in fresh water! Mine don't seem to like to lay them on the glass.

So a horrible thing happened yesterday. I was checking out the sick fish (and everyone else) as usual and I saw that the affected swordtail had just almost healed up completely BUT had developed pop eye! I swear ... one thing after another around here. Anyway, I decided to do an epsom salt bath since I was finally able to catch her (and the green tetra ... they are FAST!) and the bath went well. As I was betting her to go into the acclimation bath for a few minutes she jumped and landed in a bucket on the floor. It was a long fall. Maybe 3 feet. I gently but quickly scooped her up and put her in the water but she wasn't right. I think she damaged her swim bladder because she couldn't do anything but float upside down. I tried to help her out by positioning her in the net so she was upright but it didn't last and she eventually died. I feel so bad. Poor little fish!

So for the green tetra, Geen Fish, she is huge. I was hoping it was just full of eggs but she's so much bigger than the other females and not looking better with meds. I started epsom salt baths on her yesterday too. I'm not sure what is wrong or how to fix her. I'm still treating the tank with Metroplex and was going to start the Kanaplex again every other day from the Metro starting tomorrow since someone recommended to use them together for better results.

On a happy note, I got to watch my Cory eggs hatch last night! I took lots of pics and video so once I have a chance to look through and upload a video I'll share! For now, here's a pic!

So sorry about your green tetra, but I'm sooooooo jealous that you have your cories laying so many eggs. When mine lay eggs they just eat them right after. I only get a few seconds to scrape off any eggs. Anyway you could share your secret?

I don't think my cories have ever lain eggs! That is really cool.

I had cories but then I bought a catfish not knowing what type it was and it ate them then it got way to big for its tank n gave it to my aquaculture teacher

I have no idea!! This is the same tank I recently did the big cleaning on and lost all but 1 Amano shrimp. I guess it's finally doing well for them. I just sat on the yoga ball in front of the tank as I usually do and noticed eggs ALL OVER the glass! I gently rolled them onto my finger then into the container filled with tank water. I grabbed a few with moss and put that in too. Then added the air stone. I have been changing the water at least once daily and removing any egg shells or waste that I see. I also decided to add a bit of purigen this time since I ended up losing so many from the last batch. I'm hoping that will help protect against any ammonia spikes. I also think that I'm going to move them to a breeder once they get a little bigger too. Hopefully that will help them survive better. I have removed several bad eggs and premature fish but not too many.

Oh! The lone baby Cory that I noticed that had totally survived in its own has decided he is big enough to swim with the big fish now ... it was so cute!

They were all glass surfing in their front corner as usual. They always seem to swim in a circle all together like it's a dance or a game.

Coradee can you help me out? I have been changing the water from the parent tank regularly, at least once or twice a day. I started feeding banana worms and wiping my fingers over the bowl after feeding the main tank (so a bit of food dust would fall in for them) ... and I'm still losing several fry each day. I didn't lose any til yesterday, day 3, but lost a few yesterday and already a few today. They are currently in a bowl floating with air stone and floater plant with a bit of purigen. I have a breeder box I can put them in but I think they may still be small enough to get through the slots in the sides. What can I do to avoid losing any more?

Coradee
  • #113
Sorry you've lost some, sometimes unfortunately that just happens
I think I'd move them to the breeder box as that'll allow better exchange of water for them, you can cover the slits with some clean nylons stretched around the box, put a very thin layer of sand in for them.

I don't have any hose, I'll have to go get some. I also didn't put in sand this time thinking it may have been a source of infection or something in the last round since I ended up losing so many. I'll try the Breeder box and see how that goes. I have a net one but it's currently housing my green tetra in the sick tank and I don't want to risk infecting this tank.

So apparently they are big enough for the Breeder box! I tested with a few before pouring them all in. They can't quite get through the cracks! I put the slightest layer of sand down and a tiny piece of cholla for them to nibble from and hide in along with a couple pieces of moss. Everyone seems happy so far. Here's hoping they all survive from here on out! Oddly, I can only count about 25ish fry out of over 100 ... I probably only lost about 10 fry and maybe 10-15 eggs ... that just doesn't add up. I'm sure I'm not getting an accurate count though.

Ok guys ... I have upgraded to a 29 and am starting over. My fish are in a bucket with their bubble filter from the tank. I've drained the tank and am cleaning the area to move it so I can install the new tank in its place. (It's on our kitchen bar.) I'm moving over the heater, filter and plants. I'm cleaning everything before it goes in. I have no issues cleaning the heater and dipping the plants, but how in the world do I clean my filter (Emperor 400) without destroying my BB?! It has a cartridge of Matrix, a cartridge of Aragonite, 2 biowheels and 2 sponges that I rinse and reuse. Honestly it's probably time to replace the sponges since they are starting to fall apart ... but will rinsing and moving the aragonite, Matrix and biowheels be enough? I also have a small bubble filter that I can clean out but obviously don't want to destroy bacteria there either. I'm also cleaning EVERYTHING that has or will come in contact with this tank.

What should I do?! I really don't want to reinfect the new tank with whatever is going around!

As far as the one little guppy ... she doesn't look bloated, doesn't have Popeye but her scales still look bad.

Also, I'm stumped by this ... one of my males that I grew from a fry ... this afternoon I noticed that he looked like he had something on his head and covering his right eye ... like a fungus or something. It was at that point that I decided to go buy the new tank. I had a busy afternoon but when I got home around 8 I was looking for everyone that was sick and couldn't find him. I FINALLY found him on the ground dead. He was almost completely white and his tail was all frayed. He looked like he'd been decomposing for longer than a few hours! I don't get it! Whatever took him did it fast!

Well. Since I didn't know what to do, I just cleaned the filter box. I placed the cartridges, sponges and biowheels in the bucket with the fish. I had a new small bubble filter with Matrix seeding in another tank so I pulled it and added it to the new tank. I did turn on the emperor, but only for circulation at this point.

My next question is how do I transfer the fish from infected water to the new, clean tank? I was thinking maybe to scoop, dip in some sort of salt bath (just not sure if it needs to be aquarium salt or epsom, and don't know ratio or for how long) then release into tank. Then clean net again!

Or should I dip them in a meth blue dip?

Someone please help!

Here is the new tank.

What illness exactly were you dealing with or do you not know? I think it'd be fine just transferring the fish right into the tank and quarantining any that appear sick.

I don't know! I have another thread that has gone over everything that has happened so far ... its called Bloated Platy if you want to check it out.

Oh, I see. I'm not knowledgeable at all with diseases and I see you've been getting some advice already. I'd wait for their opinions on how you should proceed. I really hope it doesn't spread though.
