Cichlid Identification [help]

hey so I just picked up this cichlid who a young girl owned, it was in a 30cmx20cm tank and i’ve now got it in a 70 gallon. - so i’m not sure if it’s stressed and it’s colours are going haywire or whatnot

regardless, can anyone help me identify it? also is there a way to distinctly determine sexes? i’m more of a goldfish owner, i’ve had a few cichlids in the past but none like this.

thank you!

South or Central American, definitely... Has some Geophagus-like characteristics, but it's in a size-class where I'm all but an expert.

My guess is Brasiliensis and yes it seems to be showing some stress patterning.

I agree ^, Brasiliensis. Aka Pearl Geophagus.

It does appear to be a "Geophagus" brasiliensis. (The quote marks are because it is likely to be moved to a new Genus, and doesn't actually belong with the regular Geos). It is showing stress pattern, but looks quite healthy. Looks like a young male, but not an absolute sexing, maybe 90%. Males can get about a foot long, and tend to be fairly aggressive when mature.

Thank you all! I appreciate the help. He’s doing much better, eating, swimming around his tank and is a much lighter, relaxed shade. thanks again!
