Christmas Thoughts

So I was thinking of doing a Christmas theme tank for my 10 gallon. I know, I know it's early, but I'm just not sure I could put together a fall theme in time, and my questions are pretty general.

My 10 gallon still houses my blue crayfish, though I'm hoping to use Christmas funds to get a pretty 15 long or something with more leg room (ha! 'cause her name is Legs.) Until then I'd like to make it Christmassy! It's already got white sand, and I have a 6" glass Christmas tree I can put in it.

How about? Not that it needs multiple trees but they would take the place of her silk plants.

I'm not sure what kind of materials will be okay under water (for probably 6 weeks, so not super long term). Would ornaments work with metal trimming removed? Is glitter a no-no? What kind of sealant would make glitter/paint okay, if any? I know there's debate about ceramics, but I think food-safe ones are okay, so I'd have to ask the seller.

Any ideas for holiday decor that would be safe in the aquarium?

You could try looking on line at places like petco and pet smart or any chain petstores, Amazon in their fish decorations because they will usually have some seasonal fish safe decoations, like santas, snowmen ect. Happy decorating. Alison:;sman

Petsmart always has seasonal decorations in stock. Tons of Halloween stuff at my local store now.

I'd probably stay away from that one. Not sure what they've used to seal/treat the wood on the base. Also, if it's like most fake Christmas trees, it's likely some of the "needles" will come off. I could only assume they may be mistaken for food if they do, and cause some digestive issues... It's also probably got metal for the branches, and it's probably painted green so it's less obvious, and no idea if the paint would be fish safe or if the metal would hold up underwater.

I agree with everyone else, probably safer to check at the pet stores.

I suppose making your own trees out of Christmas tree moss is out of the question?

Not entirely out of the question! I have plenty of hornwort so I might use that instead. Pine needly.

Thank you Aquarist for the links - good to know I can put simple glass ornaments inside.

I really like to DIY this kind of stuff, though it's good to know you guys have had success in seasonal pet store decor.

What about getting some of the glass Christmas tree jars and filling them with substrate in holiday colors?

Red and green substrate is cute! I googled "christmas tree jars" and actually found a bunch of mason jars with little christmas trees in them. If I can seal the mason jar with something... not metal (plastic and aquarium silicone/superglue?) I could probably put anything in it as long as it would be heavy enough to stay sunk.

That would work for so many cool things. Maybe I'll have a new sub-hobby.

Snow globes would be cool! If you used a small fish bowl upside down and weighted it, you could could put a real pine tree inside that wouldn't come into contact with the water column!

What about snow using a sand pump?
