cholla wood duration

MJDuti

Has anyone else kept cholla in their tanks? I've had an awesome piece I've used for 1.5-2 years now and it's really on its last leg. The wood is getting so thin and the wholes it started with expanded. I'm afraid to touch it. I have extra pieces and will continue to use them as my shrimp and snails love it, plus I like the look. However, I expected it to last a little longer.

I use cholla in my tanks and sell it, some plain and some with plants like java moss or subwassertang tied on top. 1.5-2 years is a good long while. It is a pretty porous wood so it breaks down a lot quicker then the hard woods like Mopani.

does all wood breakdown eventually? I've had another piece of mopanI since I started fishkeeping about 4 years ago and it's just like new.
