Still a noob. I'm going to be setting up a new 29 gallon tank. I bought some cholla logs . wondering if there are any negative effects of using actual wood, such as cholla.

I highly recommend boiling them beforehand, I had one piece I put in one of my tanks and it killed everything in there within 2 hours, even the pest snails. The seller told me I should have boiled it first.
The catch is I've used some from the same seller before with no problems. Probably 99% of the time there won't be any, but I'd still recommend boiling for 10-20 minutes before hand, just in case

Honestly I don't know what it was, but if the wood was in an aquarium it risks carrying over various diseases and parasites, so yes, mainly to avoid that.

this package says on the back that its free of parasites etc. but I will boil it anyway to be safe. it also says boiling the wood enhances the rate in which the wood sinks. so that is good too. thank you
