Cherry Shrimp Cross With Fairy Shrimp?

If I put both Cherry Shrimp and Fairy Shrimp and the same tank will they cross? I assume not, because they are so different in behavior and adaptation, etc. Thanks.

I thought fairy shrimp was another name for brine shrimp?

No, that's impossible. They're a completely different species.

Fairy shrimp aren't brine shrimp: they are freshwater and adapted to survive in vernal pools.

I wondered about that. Just ordered eggs from eBay, so I rechecked the listing. They are Streptocephalus Siamensis Sanoamuang. Says they come from vernal pools in California. They like clean alkaline slightly mineralized water, so they recommend using Arrowhead Mountain spring water as a mimic. We have alkaline mineralized clean non-tap water sources here, so I expect it will work. Do you think they'll cross? Don't want them to do so, Thanks to both of you for the heads-up,

No way. They're not even in the same genus.

once you see both of them together, you'll know there's no way they can breed with each other lol. as scarface said, completely different types of shrimp. for starters, cherry shrimp can't be hatched from dried eggs like fairy shrimp can.

For what its worth, I see a listing on eBay from the U.K. that advertises Fairy Shrimp eggs with a Latin name of Anostroca. They are more colorful than the California eggs I ordered which appear to be uniformly tan. Could the two cross breed? In this case, I'd like it. Interestingly enough, they say the eggs are like Brine Shrimp (Triops.) Just a comparison of similar appearance of the eggs, I assume.

Fairy Shrimp are fascinating in their own right. They will lay eggs in your substrate, that after drying your substrate, you can start the whole process again. It's almost as if they're immortal.

A cross between Fairy Shrimp and Cherry Shrimp is not possible.

there are different types of fairy shrimp, yeah. the most common are red tails, I think. if those two do cross breed (I have no idea), then their offspring might not look as pretty as you think. a lot of times different types of shrimp will create dull-coloured offspring. at least when it comes to different coloured cherry shrimp breeding. maybe google would know?

so I did some googling. it looks like "streptocephalus siamensis sanoamuang" come from thailand, and "anostraca" is actually the order for all fairy shrimp. this is the wikipedia page for anostraca/fairy shrimp. it'll give you a list of all the families, and then all the genuses of fairy shrimp, and THEN all the species. there are tons! so if that uk listing doesn't give you the family, genus, and species names, then you have no idea which kind of fairy shrimp you're getting.

Brine shrimp are a favorite to all fish. Espically live

Right. I had several cross dialogues with them and they were obtuse and evasive, which was enough for me not to order. Thanks

Sorry for an odd question, but does anyone think Giant Fairy Shrimp (Branchinecta Giga) might be edible? They are 3-7 inches long. I've only seen pictures and it looks like de-veining might be impossible. Boil whole like a sardine? I think I'm already losing my appetite. I enjoy wild food, though, but mostly plants, mushrooms, and game. Nonetheless, thought I'd raise it. Malaysian Prawns are too hard to grow. I have access to a pond here in N. Iowa fed by an artesian well that gushes out clean deep water like a fire hydrant. Stays open in winter with water temperature of 48 degrees and summer water temps around 70 degrees. Used in the old days by commercial MississippI River fishermen to store their catch until the train arrived and the fish could be put on ice in a boxcar. Am trying to think of what I'd like to raise there. Walleye or trout are my favorite choices so far. Any suggestions?

Might be too warm for trout in the summer, unless you have a fairly deep pond. I know in NJ, the State fisheries stock several species of trout in the fall and winter. Most waters in Jersey are too shallow, so most die in the summer, since it gets too warm. There are only a handful of areas where it’s deep enough for a sustainable population to survive through the entire year.

I see. We could always have it dug out with a large backhoe. Many operators around here due to the river. It probably has gotten more shallow over the years. I'll need to go out and test its depth. Thanks.
