I'm going to be doing a water change today, and I'm wondering what chemicals I need to buy in order to make the tank healthy and safe for my fish?

Do I need something to eliminate amonia and nitrate to? Or just water conditioner for chlorine and chloramines?

My local lfs store which is the only one in my area, have a wide selection of fish and other supplies for fish, but for some reason they only carry fluval products for chemicals.

You could order Prime online, until you can get it I've used the Fluval Aqua Plus water conditioner in the past & although it's not as economical as Prime it does the job ok

Prime is the best water conditioner according to people on here.

I personally use API Stress Coat. Nothing against prime as I've never used it but I add Stress Coat for each water change and anytime I add new fish. It's marketed to make tap water safe and reduce stress in newly added fish. I've had good results.

I also agree with the suggestion for Prime, if you get this bottle from Amazon it should last you a long time depending on your tank size:
One capful treats 50 gallons. :)

As well as every other site I can think of, and I'm on many. The only time I've ever seen an issue with Prime was with a friend who had an allergy to sulfa drugs. The hydromethane sulfinate in Prime gave him the same sort of rash as sulfa based antibiotics did many years before, it took him months to figure it out.

Thanks everyone for the info. I found a pet store that carries prime, at a really good price.
