Cheap Filter To Replace Dead Hob Filter

So my HOB filter just died in my 15g, I blame it on me cleaning it and the power went out last night, it was smoking when I got to it. Fortunately I have a sponge filter in there too what cheap filter should I get to replace the HOB? Another HOB? A sponge? Other?

What sort of fish are you keeping?

Just a 15gal? Any plans on upgrading? I would go with another HOB. Fill it with good media and you're set. Don't wait too long tho as I'm not sure how that sponge filter will do. Also you'll want to keep the old HOB filled with tank water so you won't kill the good BB, then transfer the media from the old HOB to the new one and start a quick re-cycle without any stress to your inhabitants.

I'm sure someone with more knowledge will chime in

So you say an HOB, cool

Any filter in specific you recommend?

I love my fluval C2, it’s overkill for my 10 gallon but since you’re overstocked as well it may work for you. Media chambers are very customizable.

Overstocked? Are you talking about the vampire shrimp?

I shouldn’t have said overstocked as I don’t know how many of anything you have, sorry. I just know (think?) guppies are quite messy. Anyway, it doesn’t hurt to have too much filtration. Hear good things on Aqua Clear too.

Ok, try Azoo, I have a tiny one on my 5g, they may come in bigger sizes too, not sure. I’ll try to find a link

Meets your $12 limit!! Woot.

Your sponge filter will be ok for a while, for the bacteria anyway even if it’s not keeping it super clean. Good luck

Maybe looking around your area you might find a 2nd hand shop/garage sale and you might score something.

Have you checked the impeller? I have to clean mine one a month or they stop running right.

Also, maybe keep your media, tie it to your sponge filter somehow.

The media is floating around my tank now

The disappointing part is that I was about to start an RCS tank right next to this one and I was going to speed cycle the tank by putting the sponge filter in the rcs tank.

Dang that's a shame. Maybe getting 2 HOB's just to be on the safe side

I have 3 HOB's and a canister filter. Only 1 HOB is in service along with my canister filter. The other 2 HOB's are in my emergency box

Bad/good news I shoved the impeler up and it started working again But it still makes that stupid rrrrrr sound

Maybe taking it apart and cleaning the impeller & housing. Coat it with super thin layer of silicone grease and put it back together. Should stop that "rrrrr" sound.
