hI guys. for my 20 gallon, I do a 10% water change every weekday, and do between 40-50% over the weekend. is this to much?

Depends -- what are your chemistry readings? If they're normal ( 0 ammonia, 0 nitrites, 20 or below nitrates), you don't need to do that many water changes -- You'd be fine with a 20-30% change once a week. If your nitrates are high (over 20, below 40), then you can do a 2x a week change. If your nitrates are over 40, then keep doing what you're doing until they get down.

If your tank is cycled, you can't do too many water changes. If you are just changing water, and not disturbing your filters or the gravel, your routine is just fine.
P.S. If you're experiencing high nitrates as previously mentioned, then I would follow the advice you were originally given.

as long as it's not stressing the fish, it shouldn't be a problem. we do 25% weekly and maintain the water chemistry, so you could probably reduce the amount of changing you do if you wanted to, but it's fine to do that much.

alright sounds good. my tank is cycled and has low nitrates. the fish are used to the gravel vac, I just like to keep the tank as clean as possible. I only vacumn one side of the gravel per week
