I have a three-gallon tank with a betta and two nerite snails but was hoping to be able to introduce a ghost shrimp or two to better help me clean the bottom of the tank. I have sand substrate and a number of decorations but was thinking that I should offer the shrimp more places to hide should the betta decide they look like food. I wanted to try a carpeting plant but was uncertain which kind would be best for the tank and the shrimp. Any suggestions?

Solution
I had dwarf sag in a dirted tank and it went CRAZY! But you can also try s.repens. I have some in a 3 g cube and while it doesn’t really carpet very quickly, it does fill out quite nicely.

How tall is it? You could do java moss, currently working on one for my 10g.

It's about 9 inches tall (23cm) with about an inch (3cm) or so of sand substrate. How well would the java moss thrive in sand and how quickly does it carpet/spread?

Most carpeting plants like soil, strong light and CO2. You said you had a sand substrate. Do you have a light for growing aquarium plants? Do you inject CO2? If your answers are no to these questions, I think most carpeting plants would struggle. At the least, I've found carpeting plants usually need potting soil under the sand.

Java moss doesn't need substrate, it'll sink automatically. It is a rapid grower, not an "Actual" carpeting plant, but works as one.

Because it's such a small tank, I haven't looked into CO2 or plant-specific lighting. Most of the tank is lit by the lights that came with the top of the tank and the only living plant currently in there is a new windelov java fern.

I've heard that dwarf hairgrass grass and pygmy chain swords don't need as much light and have done well without CO2 in other tanks. I'm new to aquatic plants though and am trying to find something that won't require setting up CO2. I'm just looking for a decent plant that could help provide the shrimp a place to hide.

You can try dwarf sagittaria, It grows low without CO2 and slowly starts to grow into each other. Nice green...

Does it spread easily on its own or do I have to buy multiple and plant them that way?

From what I've read, subwassertang may be a good option for you too. I've not grown it myself though.

If you drop a chunk of aquatic moss it in it will spread to cover the bottom and start growing thick. Rooted carpeting plants are much more demanding and small tanks can be harder to dial in.

I started with 9 dwarf sagg plants in my 40 breeder and it quickly covered a good portion of the tank floor. It should cover a 10g in the right conditions in a month or so.

Cool! do you happen to know if it grows okay in sand? and would root tabs work for that or would liquid fertilizer be better?

+1 on the dwarf sag.

I have it sending runners throughout my shrimp tank with sand. The top of the tank is covered with dwarf water lettuce so I don't think light will be an issue for you.

You could try dwarf Hairgrass. Ive had success with it, without co2. bettas also seem to love it

You could also try Hydrocotyle Japan. This is actually a fast growing stem plant esk type of plant and is pretty easy to grow. Depending on light co2 and nutrients it will grow either tall, bushy, or full carpet. although its an easily trainable plant and after trimming it so it stays lower, (and maybe even replanting the trimmings since it is a stem plant) the plant will eventually "learn" to grow flatter and lower even without co2

Co2 does make everything easier, but in a 3g (especially with lower flow because of a betta), its can be tuff to utilize it.
(Even though technically speaking as long as u have your co2 set to the exact-ish amount of plants absorbing the co2 and then turn it off at night when they stop photosynthesizing in theory you shouldn't have any issues, but thats a whole different conversation).
