cardinal tetras: females or males or bloated?

I have 13 cardinals. I lightly feed currently because I am in the tail end of my cycle. Almost done (colony, 6days).

I notice some (around 4-5) of the tetra have a more round Nellie than the others. The others seem very slim.

I am worried that they might have an issue. All behave great, eat great, super active, and show nice color.

I know females supposed to be more round, but is this what it looks like?

That does look odd. You can sex them by how full bodied they are (The females are the most full bodied) But that is not normal size. Either they have eggs on them or have been overeating or are sick. next time you feed them keep a close eye on the tubby ones and see how much they eat.

 

That's the thing I haven't been feeding, only 1 feeding that was light. Cuz of cycle.with colony.

My rams laid eggs and I am pretty sure the tetras ate most of them... So maybe they are really full??

 

That happened last night / this morning I will watch and see what happens over the next few days.

 

Update: they were just full bellies from eating all the ram eggs the night before... Everything is normal again

 

If you are concerned that they may be constipated (bloat), you can feed them brine shrimp. They're a natural laxative, easier to feed, and less messy for the tank than shelled peas.

Also make sure you are feeding a high quality food like New Life Spectrum.
