g'morning ;D
after trying a number of times I think that I now have a good video of my betta. Still haven't a name for him yet..but working on it.
Towards the end of the video he finally comes to the front of the tank. I think he was shy of the camera....
Hope you all like him~

another video.. and a few more at the site. The challange between the betta and the dwarf gourami. Lets you know that these two really shouldnt be put together after all.

he is handsome. I think you should call him Pheonix because he just flies through the tank and he is red like fire!

Thanks! ;D he really is kewl....I do love em'. wish I knew how to add music along with the video tho.. will have to research that. I would like another male. Right now I only have a 2.5 bow tank that is empty. But that I think is too small for another betta and thought to use that as a Q/tank if needed. Maybe it would be ok to split the 10 gallon in half without a see thru divider. But it just seems that I would be cutting out a lot of "Pheonix's" swimming room. What is the opinion on that size tank? I know you mentioned before that a five gal would be enough room. I want more than "enough" room.. I would like to have appropiately sized tank for one betta, know what I mean? Maybe if I saw some video's of 5 gal tanks I can get a good idea of the space??
have a great day! ;D

Re: CapeKates Betta video

I do videography so have tools like Final Cut Pro to cut and edit videos + add music tracks. If you have a PC - did you use the windows movie maker to make your movie?

Splitting a 10 gallon does work and gives a betta room, but it's really just whether or not you want to do it. We'd love to have 2 more Bettas, but my wife doesn't want Aslan or Sora to have less swimming room. Our little Angel is in a 5 gallon hex.

Angel's pic is in this post: & a vid of her (we hadn't gotten the marbles yet) is in this post:
. She's very happy in her tank and we currently have another 5 gallon hex cycling for a new Betta.

Re: CapeKates Betta video

I just love Sora and his pea dinner. and the music going along... hehehe.. it was great! ;D and I might add.. sora is pretty clever and playful with the pea. Looks like its balancing on his nose, as their mouths are up on top. Sooooo cute!! I tried giving "Pheonix" a pea.. but he held no interest in it. ohh well...
I can alway come back and watch your videos. ;D
the tanks looked great! and it seemed as tho they had plenty of room! ;D Thanks for passing the clips along!
I use a Mac, not windows. So the software is different. I use quick time player for my movies. I upload video clips thru my Iphoto and just drag them to the desktop where I can upload to Youtube. Its that simple. I'm sure I will be able to upload music pretty much the same way. Or do it here on the mac before uploading to Youtube.
ANyway... you all have a great day! I'm off to a drs appt.

Re: CapeKates Betta video

Well Phoenix is a beauty - and very busy!!!

Just a thought, but I have Storm in a 1.66g Qtank, and it is a hex...I am thinking I should have an oblong tank for Qtank tank when it is this small, since there sure isn't much swimming room except up and down.........well on the other hand, maybe that is the point of a Q tank??

Anyway, good job!

thanks! ;D and thanks to Genie, my betta now has a name. And I really do love it! I picked up a 2.5 bow with the minI aqua clear filter at a local thrift store that I love to check out. I paid 5 bucks for it. And its in like new condition. It also had the marbles that you see in the betta tank. I thought that when I saw it, that it would make a good Q/tank, as any fish that I put in there, wouldnt be swimming around a lot and it would most likely be only one fish at a time anyway. I think that its most likely too small to add a betta to, and that I'm sure there are some 5 gal tanks out there somewhere. With summer coming, I'm sure that I will find all kinds of set ups.. decorations.. etc etc at yard sales. ;D Cant wait!!!

Thanks, I figured music from pirates was fitting for his vid. he was actually holding the very tip of it in his mouth. now we feed him the pea in really tiny pieces so he can eat them easier and not end up with a lot of pea bits in the marbles.

I use a mac myself. ;D Always was a PC guy until I got into video editing and tried OS X for the 1st time on a friend's mac. It's such a great OS and going to Unix was the best thing to happen to mac OS. Final Cut Pro is part of their prosumer video production suite. The quality got lowered by google video and youtube when I uploaded them (I guess they bring down the quality for streaming speed and storage.) I could send the originals to you sometime if you want over aI'm or ym.

Hope that dr. appt went good.

good morning!
I used to use a pc with windows myself. My sister introduced me to the world of MAC and I fell in love. I think the mac is a much better system also we don't have to worry about virus's or popups on the Mac either. ;D I use the tiger operating system. Is Unix a new operating system for mac? I'd love to see the originals sometime. ;D Maybe you can email them to me? I do use the yahoo IM but am hardly ever on it. Not sure if I still have the AIM anymore. I can add my email address in my profile page. Thanks for the offer!
dr appt went well. Just a check up for the thyroid pills I am on now after having the thyroid removed. :-\

Re: CapeKates Betta video

The mac OS is now unix-based since they went to OS X. That's why you have to run mac 'classic' apps with the app for pre-OS X software and the stable base that makes OS X so rock-solid. Microsoft has tried to rip-off OS X with Vista, but despite years of trying, have failed and ended up with the best windows yet, but it's only a 32-bit OS that's a shadow of OS X (and the 64-bit version of Vista is horrible with endless crashing). LOL.

I'd be glad to email the original movies to you, but they range in size from 8.4mb to 58.4mb. Unfortunately, my email server won't allow files over 10mb.

Thanks.. yes Phoenix sure does think that, Now that the betta is in his own tank, the remainning gourami is now the king of the tank. Harrassing the platys now so much that they are hiding out from him. What a shame. The dwarf gouramis are so beautiful, but aggressive. I don't think that I will be adding anymore of them to the community tank again. :-\

Yea, platys can be pretty timid and peaceful. Perhaps in time, things will change, but those gourami are, like you said, aggressive. Maybe a few more hiding spots for the platys?

If I added anymore plants I would have to call it my 'planted' tank and not my fish tank! lol.. Yes, they do have lots of hiding places. But they seem to want to hang around the top of the tank. I observe them watching out for the gourami to come around, then they move away. They don't have the spunk they used to and I also notice them at times, one female mostly laying around on the gravel bed. The lil cutie tetras, chase each other around but don't bother anyone else, and the gourami ignores them as well.

unfortunately it sounds like the platys might be in trouble in that tank.. they're really stressed and eventually it will do them in. we had some in a 10 gallon tank with our first Betta and even after he nipped off some fins, they were their usual selves because they weren't stressed. (the fin nipping happened when the Betta felt trapped as they all went to check him out at the same time).. so these seem very stressed and might need their own tank.

Platies unfortunately look a great deal like female bettas and can really get into trouble with a tank containing a betta. If they get into the betta or gourami's space they are indeed in trouble as they will be misidentified as the wrong type of fish and gouramis are even more likely to kill them than male bettas in my opinion. You may not see it during the day but the aggression may be happening at night when they do not see human activity and you could wake up to dead fish some morning.

True.. the platys as tank mates was one of those ideas fed to us when we first got started and we thought it sounded good. It lasted 6 days before we seperated them and let Super Mario have his tank to himself.

good morning!
Well, last nite I was watching a young male platy that wasn't doing good. listless, getting swept by the flow of the filter. Not showing any signs of fin movement, just floating around. I knew he wasn't going to make it til morning. I just checked, and he is dead. The other last three platys are not doing good either. I took out the betta after being in the community tank for four days. That was weeks ago. The only threat left in the community tank is the one gourami. I have not seen it nip any of the platy, but your right, it can happen at night when the lights are out. I checked the temp* reading last evening and it was almost 82* so I lowered it, thinking that possibly it was too warm for the platys. It is now around 78* I started out with 6 platy at the end of march, and have lost three due to cycling and one dalmation molly. All of which had no physical signs of injury or disease on them. I have a 2.5 g tank that I was going to set up for a Q/tank, but haven't yet. Would it be any good to set it up now and put the three platy in there at this point? Or should I move the gourami to that tank? Id much rather have a cycled tank for them of course, but time is running out for them. The tetra and the gourami are doing fine. This problem is just isolated to the platy and I'm trying to figure out what can be wrong with them? Is it truely stress that is killing them off like this?

It does sound like stress might be the platy's only problem. So seperating them from the gourami is best. Would it be possible to setup a tank divider in your tank? Then you could separate them without needing the uncycled q-tank. If not, I'd put the platys in there and treat the water with NovAqua+ or Prime to keep the levels from being toxic.

HI there, good idea. I guess I can work on a divider of some sort and see if that helps them, without having to put them in another tank right away. I will have to see what I can come up with.

Thanks! I have checked out the topic on the DIY dividers. I have to go out this afternoon and will stop at the craft store and see what I can find in the way of supplies. I can also check out and see what the price is going for dividers at petsmart. Since I want one for the betta tank,, and that will be permenent, I may buy one for that tank at petsmart. But for the tempory one for the 29 gallon I may just make that one from DIY.
