can't find nerites

I have been looking for weeks and I cannot find any place nearby that sells freshwater nerite snails. I would be willing to buy online if I could find a good price for them. Does anyone know a good, low cost place to get some?

Have you checked your local Petsmart or Petco lately? Petsmart just started carrying 'mixed nerites' which seem to be all olive, black, or brown. My largest local Petco carries tiger and horned nerites, but their aquatics guy does all the buying and that store always has cooler stuff than anybody else. Still, if they can get it, your store might be able to get them for you too.

I looked online and they didn't have them listed. I suppose I can call the closest petcos tomorrow and see if they have any in. Thanks for the tip.

Petco and Petsmart don't list all of their fish online, just the ones they actually sell online. You could check in the store, Aquabid, and Peabody's Paradise will send you some on request with a plant package.

Since you have over 50 posts, you can also keep an eye on the Fish Lore Buy/Sell/Trade/Free section of the forum.

Your LFS may not have them but consider asking if they can get them?

I'm considering ordering some from amazon just to make it easier. I don't know if I want horned or not though. I emailed The Wet Spot over in portland but they don't carry nerites because of Oregon law. I guess I should check Washington law and see if I can even have nerites.

I second the peabody's idea.

EDIT: I know I'm late and you've already sort of decided but I like that option.

That's a perfect idea. You can never have to many plants.

I'm not 100% yet where i'm going to get them. I'm trying to stretch my money and get the best deal, which is a problem when it comes to shipping. I don't want to pay 20.00 for two snails. So I am still open to advice and continuing my research. It will probably be a few weeks to a month before I make the purchase.

I may have found somewhere I can get some WITHOUT paying an arm and a leg in shipping costs. Here's hoping lol

Did you check out eBay?

Yes, all I found were packahes of at the least 10 snails, for like 30 bucks. The wallet would murder me if ispent that much on snails. That, and I only need two or three max.

What law? I live in Oregon and even my Petsmart store that I work at carries Nerite Snails. World of Wet Pets, another Portland store, carries a couple species of Nerite Snail. I would email or call them. I don't remember if Pets On Broadway (another portland store) has them or not.

I own 2 tracked (or tiger) nerite snails that I picked up at Petsmart. I've seen the zebra ones as well.

Look on Aquabid. They sell them individually. I just ordered 10. Suppose to come tomorrow.

Yep. I don't know why they said what they did - unless the person you talked with was one of the cashiers or something... and just assumed since they don't sell nerites that maybe they were illegal. No ideas here, but they aren't prohibited at all.

Also Nerites don't seem to be on the list that you can't own in Washington either...

I'd call the other stores and make sure the nerites aren't in a tank that is quarantined before you head down. Both of the other two stores I mentioned sometimes have a tank that you can't buy out of because they are treating the fish. Of course, that is the same way with the Wet Spot.

The snails are like $2 each. Hopefully that store has them - if not, there are others in the area that will.

Update, called my favorite petco in town, spoke to the aquatics dept, and I can expect a call back on thursday about orderin in some nerites and letting me know how much they will cost per snail. I checked portland, and they had them but my bf doesn't want to take me there and I don't drive so I have to wait. Also depends on how well the snails ship, she said they don't have the best luck with shipping snails. But I'm keeping my fingers crossed!!

Good morning,

Since you have found some Nerites and you've created a new thread, see link below, I'm going to close this thread.

Thanks!
