So in the 10 gal tank, I could have 3 fancy guppies, 3 endlers, and 3 ghost shrimp?

Provided the guppies and endlers are all male, yes you can.

Yes that would be a nice set up and guppys come in so many color variations you would have the colorfullest tank around

In the 5 gal tank, could I have it as a shrimp tank with 3 ghost shrimp, and 3 cherry reds? Any other suggestions for any of the tank would greatly appreciated!

You could though gost are a little more aggressive than other shrimp and would potentially kill any shrimp fry that the RCS's have, in the 5 gallon I would start with 5-6 RCS (3-4 females and 2 males) they will breed and flourish like I said I started with 10 shrimp in my 10 gallon and within 2 months I have about 50-60 shrimp and 3 new berried females (they breed like rabbits)

I wouldn't do it. I've seen threads about ghosts eating RCS

This is my 10 gallon shrimp tank I know I want to get more plant but it gives you an idea of how beautiful a shrimp tank can be

I'd go with all male guppies. I would suggest five in the 10 gallon with a snail or some shrimp

I've had good luck with uneven numbers of guppies in my tank.

Also- don't waste your time with ghosts. In my opinion you're better off with cherries.

Thanks! I will consider that!

My Personal opinion is if you go with snails becareful which ones you go with, I thought I had baby apple snails but they turned out to be pond snails now I have a major snail issue and I'm not sure if the 3 assassin snails I got will be enough, but with Ghost Shrimp and Guppy fry I don't have a lot of snail Killing Specie options

What snail would be best?

nicole4434
  • #53
Make sure that it is an apple or mystery snail and only get one (these snails have specific sexes unlike other snails and so need the opposite snails to breed)

That should of been my first clue when I had 1 cute little guy and then I had more

Apple and mystery snails are the same snail it just depends what store you go to and what they call them

Try not to get one under 1/2 inch big as pond snails do not get that big

I'm sure you kinda get oh to stock a tank now but I use this site It tanks the size of your tank and your filtration setup into account and lets you know what your weekly water changes should be at. There is also and option although not 100% accurate but a button that says "Display only suitable species for your tank" but that's just to give you an idea you should always look up more info about the fish your wanting to buy. One more cool thing is that the site will also will you know if there is a problem with the fish you want to add and tell you what it is. hope that helps you

not sure about the bamboo shrimp as the males can get close to 4 inches and the females about 2.5 inches were as the cherry shrimp stay about an inch long, and with the apple snail (they are scavengers if they can catch it they will eat it, dead, sick, slow don't matter) so not sure how they would be with baby shrimp, but hopefully someone else can pipe in, my 10 gallon is for my RCS only and if my population gets to much I move babies to another tank to feed the fish

Thanks, that site is really helpful!

Could I start out with 2 cherry shrimps of the opposite gender and than have them breed to populate the tank?

You have to be careful with some of the Aqadvisor numbers in a 5 gallon tank if you put in 3 RCS it says you have 97% capacity filled which is really weird as when I upgrade the tank to 10 gallon it says I'm at 32% then I add 7 more shrimp (which is the number of 10 shrimp in the 10 gallon like I started with it says I'm at 37%) so some accuracy issues and such but I definitely look at my shrimp and shrimp babies and am glad I didn't start in the 5 gallon (as if I bring my number up to 100 shrimp it says I'm at 88% so obviously the 10 gallon is preferred over the 5 gallon, but with water changes and small numbers the 5 gallon should be okay

yes, I would go with Ghost shrimp and a betta, that way if your betta likes his shrimp fresh your not out of a lot of money

Just remember that baby ghost shrimp are very hard to raise. They will need complete green water and a large source of algae.
Don't be surprised if the babies die.

Ghost shrimp are hard to breed as well, so for beginnier shrimp that you don't want to breed its a good choice, there are another type of shrimp that only breed in salt water but can live in fresh water I just can't remember the name of them

I and putting the ghost shrimp in with the betta, I think it will take care of the baby shrimp.

ghost shrimp lay their eggs in brackish water. Any larvae will nit survive in fresh water.

Aquadvisor is generally an innacurate source - you would do well to take everything it says with a pinch of salt, much the same as you would with LFS advice.

That's how

Yeah, I would definitely get those poor Danio's out - there is no space for them to stretch their fins!

Not true. That's a myth. They can and will breed in freshwater, you just have to feed them things such as infusoria, microworms and baby brine shrimp.

Ok, here are some pics of my aquariums:

The top pic is the 5 gal tank, the 2nd to top pic is my ghost shrimp.
And the last few pics are my cascade 300 filter setup. In the back ground of the last pic you will see the pregnant fish. I used hot glue to transfer the original water output into airline tubing which shoots the water into an airlift tube from an old under gravel filter. Thus creating bubbles to aerate the tank, and the airlift tube stoping all the water currant.
