Tank
What is the water volume of the tank? 20 Gal
How long has the tank been running? 1/16/21 it finished its cycle and had the first fish added, 1/23/21 was the last time a new fish was added into the tank
Does it have a filter? Yes, sponge filter and an airstone
Does it have a heater? I unplugged the heater now that it is summer because the room stays hot enough to maintain the temperature
What is the water temperature? 75 degrees
What is the entire stocking of this tank? (Please list all fish and inverts.)
-7 neon tetras
-4 otocinclus
-1 bamboo shrimp
-50-100 cherry/orange shrimp

Maintenance
How often do you change the water? once a week always, I do this because I believe it is good for the cherry shrimp for me to be consistent
How much of the water do you change? 10%
What do you use to treat your water? Fritz complete
Do you vacuum the substrate or just the water? vacuum substrate

*Parameters - Very Important
Did you cycle your tank before adding fish? yes
What do you use to test the water? test strips and API ammonia liquid test kit
What are your parameters? We need to know the exact numbers, not just “fine” or “safe”.
Ammonia: 0
Nitrite: 10 (I add fertilizer to the tank so it always stays around 10 unless I need to put more in)
Nitrate: 0
pH: 6.4

Feeding
How often do you feed your fish? every other day
How much do you feed your fish? a decent amount
What brand of food do you feed your fish? I feed live microworms from my microworm cultures, frozen brine shrimp, crushed Hikari algae wafers, micro pellets, vinegar eels
Do you feed frozen or freeze-dried foods? Frozen is preferred

Illness & Symptoms
How long have you had this fish? since 12/1/2020
How long ago did you first notice these symptoms? 5/6/2021
In a few words, can you explain the symptoms? 2 neon tetras had fungus on the body, 2 neon tetras had fungus on the mouth
Have you started any treatment for the illness?
YES! Im at my wits end. On 5/11-5/15, I did a 5 day treatment of Maracyn, Aquarium Solutions Ich X, and Fritz Paracleanse. After completing this, the two neons with body fungal infections had their infections visibly go away, one of the neons with mouth fungus had its mouth fungus dramatically decrease, 1 neon had no difference with its mouth fungus. I waited a few weeks and from 5/28-6/2, did 6 days of Aquarium Solutions Ich X to see if using it alone would help. Then from 6/5-6/9, I did a 5 day treatment of Maracyn again. The two that had body fungus look amazing, you can't tell they had fungus. 1 with mouth fungus barely has anything on it's mouth now. The final neon still, unfortunately, has NO difference to his mouth appearance!

Was your fish physically ill or injured upon purchase? Yes, all of them came with ich back in December.
How has its behavior and appearance changed, if at all? The only change is the physical appearance of its mouth. It has 2 big, white bumps on its mouth. It's behavior has not changed at all though. It still eats well, has good looking fins, and enjoys exploring the tank.

Below I am attaching photos of the two neon tetras that have fungus around the mouth. The fish that at the top of the screen is the one that had fungus around its mouth but now barely has anything. The one at the bottom still has the mouth fungus.

My mom had some neon tetras with a fungus like this that we couldn't get rid of - they didn't make it, unfortunately. We treated with Ich-X, Erthryomycin (Maracyn), and salt and none of it worked.

I'd isolate that fish and treat with 1 tbsp of salt per 2 gallons. I'd imagine anti-fungal resistant funguses do exist, just like anti-biotic resistant bacteria do - the salt should treat it, whether it's bacterial or fungal. If it's salt-tolerant, too, we may be outta luck.

Thank you!

I just ordered aquarium salt from Amazon and it should be here in 2 days. I have an isolation 5 gallon bucket that I'll use and hopefully that will work! If not, you're probably right and it is just resistant to the different medicines considering its other three tank mates had fungus and they appear to be fine now.

The good news is (IME with treating my mom's fish) it doesn't seem to be contagious from fish-to-fish (I'm thinking it may be an environmental issue at a wholesaler or a breeder) and ,my mom's fish lived for about a year with the fungus before passing away over night. They were a healthy weight and looked okay (other than the fungal infection), so their passing could have been unrelated.

Who knows! Definitely let us know what you find out.
