Canister Filters? Im So Confused.

Hello! I am starting a new 45 gallon tank that will eventually house 3 oranda goldfish. I would like to do a canister filter because how I am planning on planting the tank any hob would get in the way. I have never owned a canister filter and am confused as to why they are better and which are better than others. I have started research and have seen a couple people say the gph should be x5 the number of gallons. Based on this I found the Hydor Professional External Canister Filter. It filters 280 gph and fits my budget but has anyone owned one or heard reliable info about them? For those that have them are they quiet? All my tanks are in my bedroom so it needs to be at least bearable noise wise.

Thanks for any help!

I own a hydor450 and love it. Easy to maintain easy to setup. I can never hear it run. I use the spray bar. Do you have any specific questions?

Do you think that 280 gph is enough or should I go up to 320 gph. I am worried about how harsh the flow will be ao the goldfish can still swim fine and so my plants are not harmed. Also why are canister filters considered better/more efficient than hobs?

Also I keep reading about stuff to put into the filter. Like in trays or something? What do yall put in?

A canister can contain a ton more beneficial bacteria. Takes up less space in tank, my heater is an in-line heater so the only think in tank is the spray bar and a long skinny tube. Better circulation because you can put the output and intake as close or as near each other as you want. The 280 (that’s the hydor350 correct) should be more than sufficient

I have the 450 so I have 4 trays, I just use what came with. Coarse pad in bottom, 2 trays of the bio rings and then the white pad (filter floss)

Thank you Lh 90 gallon! Can I ask what an in line heater is?

Canisters are more efficient since they hold more media, plus you can customize the media you want to use. from a noise stand point you don't really know they are running. I'm less then 5' from a Marineland Magnaflow 360 and a Fluval FX4 and don't here them

An in-line heater is a heater that you add onto the output line of the filter (the hose that runs from filter to tank). Here is a picture of my in-line heater
