Canister Filter For 55gal

I'm upgrading to a 55gal tank, and I am looking for recommendations for a canister filter. I have used the fluval 06 series, which I really like. They rate the fluval 406 for up to 100 gallons, but the flow rate is rated at 383gph. I tend to cram a lot of media in them which I'm sure drops that number even lower. Any suggestions?

Make sure when you're using the GPH rule that you aren't calculating a canister like a HOB filter. Canisters should be 5 x gallon of tank, where as a HOB should be 8-10 x gallons. If you can fit the media in the and the baskets still fit like they're supposed to, your flow rate isn't going to slow down much. I have a Fluval 206 on my 29 gallon and it's doing a beautiful job.

I only really have used some plen plax and fluval filters in the past. Fluval I preferred only due to the noise. It was quieter. I know lots of people use and like the eheim filters and they're not crazy expensive but you could always build your own! I just finished a new one that has 1050gph flow and I built it for less than 50 $ with the actual pump costing 80% of that price. Its really easy and you can hold a lot more media than typical canisters. Just a thought. Really it depends on what you want to pay, there's a myriad of choices.

 

The best value per gallon of flow would be the sunsuns. May want to check them out but I'd think your fluval would be plenty. If you wanted some more turnover I'd just throw a small HOB on there along with it.

 

I have an Eheim on mine (one of the Pro 3e series), and it's fantastic. I got it used so I didn't have to pay near full price, and it's (very silently) chugging alone nicely!

 

I've heard good things about Eheim and sunsuns, can't really go wrong between those and fluval... they're all great!

 

Eheim 2215 on my 55 gallon and a Sponge filter, you can never go wrong with a sponge filter.
