Can you make an internal sump safe for fry?

I'm currently planning out a 10 gallon planted Blue Dream shrimp tank. This will be my first time trying to breed anything and making a show tank.
I want to do a DIY internal sump with an 80GPH pump. 6:01 has a good view

My second, safer, option is a corner sponge filter like this one (with more holes) 4:50 has a good view

My problem with traditional sponge filters is the frequency that they need to be cleaned and how easily it can become clogged.
What I like most about the internal sump design is the fact it provides surface skimming and offers a lot of what traditional sumps provide. Is there a way to make it safe for fry and still maintain it's ability to skI'm the surface?

skimmer sucks them in.
you need a sponge or fine mesh.

the second is like a HMF (Hamburg Mattenfilter).
construct it so they can't get behind it.
have it air powered to add oxygen.
