Can you have a too big of a heater in a tank?

so, I bought this 50 watt heater from a private seller, and was wondering if it would be too big/strong for a 10 gallon tank? thanks

An adjustment knob is what controls the thermostat that in turn controls the temperature.
The heater you have is quite ok in a smaller tank.

There are very cheap heaters that have no knob and just stay on continuously. These cheap heaters are not suitable.


As your heater has the knob it will be fine.

A lot of times the numbers printed on the heater are not accurate, so you need to check with a thermometer.
