Can someone help with Eheim Jager?

I decided to buy a more expensive heater for my cycling 10g tank so I went for an Eheim Jager 50W. I have it set to 77 and for some reason it's keeping my tank at like 90 degrees. My water is basically how I like my coffee :/

Apparently there's some kind of dual knob calibration system but I'm not sure how it works. As far as I can tell only one knob moves. And the instructions are useless, the manual just explains how to plug it into the wall in 47 different languages.

Anyone have experience with these dumb heaters? Can you explain how to set it to an appropriate temperature?

Thanks

I watched the YouTube videos and followed the instructions... I have the red knob right in the middle of its track and the blue knob is set to 77... Tank still super hot. For reference the room temperature is 64

You have to calibrate it. I got the old model, so I don't know exactly how the new one works, but in principle it's: pull out the button, dial the water temp you read on the meter, leave it in the water for 5 minutes, push the button in, dial the temp you desire. Done.

There are vids on youtube.

Edit: Also, once you calibrate them they are the most effective and reliable by far. The one I have is at least 10 years old and still working great.

Here's best reference, sometimes the red arrow indicator could be bumped maybe in packaging etc.

Yea I watched the videos... Mine doesn't have a button lol. It has a red dial and a blue dial... The red dial is on a 1 inch wide track with no markings or graduations... The instructions on YouTube say to put the red dial in the middle and set the blue dial to your desired temperature

I did that and my tank is at 90

Lol sorry about that guys, I assumed that setting the temperature, plugging it in, and letting it heat your water to the set temperature was the end of the video. Silly me

Apparently I need to buy a thermometer now and calibrate the red dial based on what the thermometer reads.

The stores in my town don't sell good quality thermometers so this product is useless as it will only be as accurate as the thermometer. Ordering online is a major inconvenience for me :/

For reference, of the two thermometer brands available to me locally I have tested both in my other tank. One reads 78 and one reads 81

Anyways, thanks for the help! I'll return it and buy one that works out of the box

The original posts states the water is at 90 degrees. How do you know or what method did you check it with?
Edit: figuring you mean hot to the touch if so disregard.

It's just really hot lol. 20% of the water evaporated overnight and my plants are dying

Got a cooking thermometer? Would do for this.

That would probably work haha, unfortunately I do not. However, I just realized that the world won't end if I borrow the good thermometer from my other tank for a couple minutes tomorrow.

I am really tired. Been writing essays all day lol.

Thanks

A different heater is not guaranteed to be any more accurate. They all need to be calibrated/checked for accuracy with a thermometer, whether they have a separate calibration dial or not.

meh fair enough but it should probably say somewhere on the box that it requires a secondary thermometer for calibration. The videos recommend using an expensive digital thermal probe lol. Should I really need to spend 60 dollars plus shipping on an additional product to make my 35 dollar heater work properly? I will calibrate it tomorrow with my topfin thermometer but like I said, this product is now only as accurate as my topfin thermometer

Yeah it’s annoying. But generally even the el cheapo thermometers are more accurate than the thermostats in heaters.

Agreed. Human being thermometer will work, digital or mercury. The $2 mercury thermometers at petco or walmart also more than do the trick if either store is local to you.

I keep saying mercury but I don't think that's actually what's in them anymore...
