Can play sand be safe

I'm working on setting up a new tank normally I have substrate laying around that I can use this time I don't. I was wondering if play sand or pool filter sand from home Depot would be safe for a aquarium once rinsed in water of course. Has any one every use this personally? Is it safe for the fish? Is it a good bed for good bacteria.

I am not actually sure the brand. I went and got mine from Home Hardware. Just the cheap $5 bag.

I use both. In fact now that my wife has given up on her new rack (something about it still being tippy) and just put her new 29 on a desk, I'm going to go wash some play sand today.
Currently I'm boiling wax off some river rocks she found at the flower store. And then rinse some pea gravel.

The only thing is you do have to rinse them well. I once nuked a monster sword (fills a 60 gal big) and some feeder ghosts showing someone I could establish a tank instantly. I had been ecocomplete for so long I didn't rinse the sand.. oops, sorry sword and shrimp.

That is called "Fish tax". Take a normal cheap object, place it in a fish store and it is now an expensive object.

Lol heck yeah I ended up getting some play sand and lava rocks from home Depot for this tank I'm confident with the sand bc it's just plain sand but the rocks I'm sceptical

I've used both, but prefer pool filter sand. The kind I got from a local pool supply store doesn't need rinsing.

Rinse until you think it can't be rinsed anymore. Then rinse it twice as much.
