Your best bet for sand for them would be pool filter sand.
It has no sharp edges and does not compact.
It can be found at home improvement stores or pool supply stores.

Live sand has organisims in it that would die in fresh water.

Dino, I had the same question, but not about live sand, only the marine sand, as sold in the LFS. My question though is because it is touted to "buffer" and my ph is already at 7.4 should I stay away from it for freshwater? I was wanting to use some as a white water river running through my tank, with planted substrate on either side, then cover the white sand with light blue glass marbles, I know everyone has their ideas of what would be nice for aquascaping their tanks. But as only approx 1/4 of the substrate of a 125 gal tank would this cause problems? I do also plan to have a fairly large piece of driftwood.
As far as I know stores up here don't cater to pools. There may be a store in Anchorage, but I haven't found one. Thanks for your help.

HI Timmy, No I don't live in Anchorage, that city is 120 miles south of where I live, but it is all relative, I drive in quite often.... By the way, I was in this past weekend, and went to that Fish store I had heard was so great! > > I just want to report they had tattoed fish. It looked like maybe they had them since Valentines, because the fish were white, with red hearts on them... :-\ I was so disappointed, HAD to complain to the management. Just got a noncommital answer, so I let them know I would post on all the forums that THE REEF in Anchorage Alaska has tattooed fish!!!!! They weren't that hot of a store anyway, so I don't feel any need to go back.
