I plan to test out my skills with shrimp with a cheap kind first (ghost shrimp) instead of an expensive one (RCS). However, I plan to breed them in my 5 gallon until I know I am ready for RCS. However, I don't want the ghost shrimp to interfere with the RCS breeding so can I raise them in a 5 gallon bucket from LOWES or HOME DEPOT? If not what shold I do with them?

I think it should be fine provided you have the proper filtration.. although I have never dealt with shrimp of any kind in my 7 years if being in the hobby.. maybe someone with more experience can chime in, but I think it should be fine.

Does anyone know of a really cheap bucket that I can get to house the shrimp?

You can usally find free 5 gal buckets on craigslist, just give em a good wash and they should be good to use

I use a clear sterilite 5 gallon/20 quart tote as a quarantine tank. I picked it up at Wally World. It should also work to house shrimp as long as you keep it filtered and heated. You can keep fish/ shrimp in anything that won't leach toxins and can hold water of the appropriate volume. Rubbermaid containers work, but they don't come in clear plastic generally.

Breeding ghost shrimp is a lot more difficult than breeding RCS since they go through a larval stage. I use a lot of 5 gallon buckets from lowes/hd for fish transfers and whatnot, but I don't know if I'd use one as a growout tank since you can't really see what's going on in it besides from the top down.

I know but I don't want to waste money on shrimp to try to breed them and have them die. Since my parents are paying for them I don't want to waste their money. I would like to try with ghost shrimp first and then RCS

Honestly Red Cherry Shrimp are pretty hardy as long as you keep the temp and water quality stable. They aren't like crystal red shrimp that need reverse osmosis water that you remineralize.
