I'm still new to the hobby, but might your tank be a little overstocked? Some more experienced members could give you some advice on that, if you detail a bit how many of each you have.

There are too many species. In a diverse tank like that, a betta would get stressed and become extremely agressive. Also, are ember Tetras small? Would a betta try to eat them?

Side note:
Swordtails and platies will crossbreed
Mollies and guppies will crossbreed

4 platys and swordtails total
2 balloon mollys.

3 rummynose
2 guppies
2 rainbow

And of the tiny fish 12 neon/embers

I wouldn't add a betta into the tank, you should try and get the rummy nose up to about 6 fish. And I know the Australian Rainbowfish are also a schooling fish that can do well in a school of 5 or more. You're a little space limited on that at 150l tank.

Hi, welcome to fishlore
I wouldn’t really recommend adding a betta, you have too many flashy colourful fish imo that betta are known for acting aggressively towards.
Rummynose tetras, rainbows, ember tetras, and neon tetras are schooling fish and need at least 6 of their own kind to feel comfortable, so I’d recommend upping your schools to that amount.
That’s a lot of schools for a 150 though, so it might be a good idea to consider rehoming 2 of your schooling species in order to give the remaining schools more space.

.......and a betta in that tank would have a near impossible time eating.

Bettas need warmer water than a lot of your fish

I hadn't planned on getting a heap more but I had read recently that rummynose are better with 6 so I might have to get a few more for them. I hadn't realised the rainbow tetra was a schooling fish, thanks forbthe heads up.

Yes the Rainbowfish you have look like the Murray River Rainbowfish known as the Australian Rainbowfish at the stores, They can grow to be around 10cm in length, I have a group of 5 that are fully grown.

Well that's the last time I listen to the "fish expert" at that store then oh well what a shame I might have to get another tank
Appriciate the feedback.

Not all those employees in some of the stores know much about fish, your better off with a small privately owned local store where the owners are fish keepers and actually research what they are selling. Larger chain stores hire anyone for the most part, I have encounter very few employees at the big stores that really have an interest in the fish they sell. Only one in the last 5 years even asked me what size tank the fish I wanted was going into.

yeah the live bearers are going to breed and your betta may get bloat from eating all those fry, and if you want to keep the fry then the betta is not going in the tank. the fish will breed and that is already enough of any bit of added ammonia to the tank.
