Can aquarium safe lube be bought at hardware store?

Does anyone know of any lubricants that can be bought at the hardware store that are aquarium safe?
I am looking to lube O rings etc.
Also, curious as to if you can lube the prop on aqua clear filters?

I read that vaseline is okay for O rings but there are (of course) conflicting reports on the net.

I asked the same thing to jaysee and he said it won't work

 

They do make lubricants that are safe for use in water treatment facilities so I would assume (and we all know what happens when we do that) that they would be sufficient for aquarium use. You may also want to look into food safe products as another alternative.

 

Cooking oil is not a good idea. Think of what happens when you attempt to mix oil and water. Nobody wants oil coating their tank's water surface.

Instead, use petroleum jelly. Petroleum jelly is safe as long as it's the plain kind without any scents or additives. I use it on my canister filter's O rings all the time.

I use American Fare Petroleum Jelly, 100% Pure. <--stated on the label. I've had it for years. No clue as to where I purchased it. Probably WalMart or KMart.

you can buy FOOD GRADE NON TOXIC lube made for O-rings. As a matter of fact most if not ALL fastfood and places with ice cream machines use it weekly to lube the o rings in the ice cream machines

Please note, that some jellies, such as some Vaseline's may contain Medications of some sort and this is NOT the type of jelly that you want to use.
